Thorns... (Flashback/Test Scene)

Jun 26, 2008 22:48

She was on Earth again. Kyle was somewhere and supposed to be back soon. She was with the Titans again and Roy was acting a bit...more like the Roy she remembered rather then being this government-back near tyrant he could drop into being so easily now. Bart and Lian have been throughly chipper and...soothing...in their manic sort of way. She ( Read more... )

It was the singing that drew Rose into the kitchen, more than restlessness. Her mother didn't sing very often, but it was wonderful to listen to when she did, and it had left Rose with a fair appreciation of music. She hovered by the kitchen door, feeling out of place but curious as she watched Donna at the stove. She wasn't officially one of the Titans, but they let her hang around, mostly so she could take lessons from some of the fighters, and try to offer to babysit if no-one else was available.

Juliet
The dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded into my heart...

Rose walks silently. Half of it is her training. Donna can't help but wonder if a part of it is trying to make herself invisible out of some sense of feeling not accepted. Joey used to...She cut herself off from the thought. she's a little embarrassed by the song, though she not sure why.

"Hi, Rose. Just cooking breakfast. You're welcome to some."

It's kind of a disappointment when the singing stops. She could just be invisible and listen while Donna was singing, but now that she's not... Too late to back out now.

"Ah, I didn't mean to interupt you..." The offer of breakfast, while welcome, is still unexpected. She's not really a Titan, how does she rank eating with them? It's a stupid question, she's eaten here before, but in the early morning light it's harder to see her place.

"No, please interrupt. The food's for you too." Gods, that sounds lame. She indicates a chair, not really giving a damn if it's part of some sort of seating violation Roy cooked up this week.

"I just...have the song stuck in my head today for some reason."

The gesture gets a cautious nod before Rose lets herself settle into one of the chairs. She props her elbows on the table and rests her chin on her palms, watching Donna. "It's pretty... you have a nice voice..." Shy compliment.

She blushes a little. "Thanks. If you can believe it, Sped -" Argh! He's had the new name for months! Screw it, she can say his actual name if Rose in in the base. "Roy is better." She scoops some pancakes onto a plate and sets them in front of Rose. "Used to be in a band if you can believe it."

Rose blinked slowly, and then shook her head. "I... really can't. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to do the band thing." She reached for the butter, inhaling the scent of the pancakes. "Thank you."

((sorry. yahoo only just delivered your response))

Her lip twitches. "Yeah, he's really different now."

"Oh. I'm sorry?" From the sound of it, he's not changed for the better.

She does not want the younger team to get sucked into personal stuff. That was Roy's whole thing about making it government and professional. Still, Bart was carrying on the tradition of massively doomed relationships within the team, even if Rose wasn't likely noticing. Her and Kyle were her and Kyle and he seemed to be just sticking around to see her more.

She wouldn't go to the JLA though, even when Kyle asked about it. There were two promises holding her back - one to herself and one to Dick. She wants to say, "it's nothing," but the truth sense kicks in.

"He's happier now, I think. He has or has had everything he's worked for and wanted."

Rose nodded slowly, head tilting slightly. "'Has had'?" Maybe her mother was right about this not being the place for her. But she wanted to help and it was better than trying to work alone.

Donna shrugs. "He's traveled. Adventured." She smirks. "Been out with beautiful women. Saved the world and made a name for himself. Now he has the leadership of the Titans, a solid job, and with Lian he has a family and his freedom." She turns back to Rose from flipping more pancakes. "It's his dream life."

The comment about 'out with beautiful women' makes Rose smirk. "And I'll bet if you ask him he'll say his daughter is the prettiest." There's the tiniest bitter twist to her lips, for just a moment, before it's gone as if it never existed. "Did his dream life include being a rules-lawyer? Mama's not as strict as he can be." She's genuinely curious between bites, not trying to be rude.

She missed the bitterness. "Probably. But I think that's being a parent...a real one. Not everyone that has children can see that beauty." Which saddens her. It's like in court Terry acts like Bobby is some "proof," or trophy that his ego - not his being - depend on. Don't get her started on Cheshire or Aquaman.

Her second question is an "ouch." As far as she knows only Ted, Dinah, her ex husband, and the pair themselves know about the days when she and Roy were in the apartment. Most days, it just seems like a hazy sort of dream.

"I don't know," she admits. His eyes seem so different these days. "There was a time I would have said 'no,' but people change I guess."

Rose sighed. Her father didn't even know she existed. Which was actually a good thing, but that didn't stop it from hurting.

"Yeah, I guess they do." Time for a change of subject. "Do you like being a Titan?"

This very different. Some days it even feels a little surreal, but the next bit is the truth. She takes Rose's hand lightly.

"I thought I'd 'grow up,' and join the JSA or I'd just marry and quit. But my heart is here, and I would never want to be anywhere else."
