I agree with
Germain Greer, Steve Erwin has had it coming for a long time. Decades of harassing wildlife with impunity was finally put to an end by a cool headed (and hot tailed) Sting Ray.
I remember when I first passed the Australia Zoo about 7 years ago and saw the massive sign of Erwin torturing an unfortunate crocodile I thought, 'what the fuck!?'. Admittedly I only watched one of his shows and only then because I was cooped up on a Quantus flight. It was a horrific experience, but much worse for the poor cobra that Erwin had choppered in to show his respects to. The cobra was battling to stay grounded amidst the blast of the rotor blades and Erwin booming how regretful he was at not being able to handle the reptile - i think one of the few that escaped his spatulate clutches. I guess it's no surprise that conservative politicians and their herds are in tears over his death; he normalised a politics of antagonism and the elitism of humans over 'the beasts'.
