If you want to take this to the next (geek) step, then you need to get a ScanGauge II. This little $140.00 unit will give you every statistic you can imagine concerning your vehicles performance: MPG, gal./mile, $/mile, MPH, RPM etc. all in real time. It plugs into the OBDII jack in your car (On Board Diagnostics). All vehicles since 1996 have this connector under the dash somewhere that repair places use to diagnose vehicle problems. The ScanGaugeII will do this too.

I have one and it is proving to be very helpful in learning how to drive to optimize fuel consumption with my new Ford Escape Hybrid.
