Round the back
Nerves didn’t begin to describe it. Bad enough to be playing with all this expectation, but now he wanted to impress as well.
‘Just as well I can’t see a blinding thing’ thought Alex. Walking on stage and playing but unable to spot Miles amongst the crowd. Alex switched on his professionalism, and played. And everyone watched him.
Later, lighting up round the back, Alex leans against the wall to get some stability, post gig-euphoria making him ever-so-slightly shaky.
“You were alright as it goes” and it’s Miles, right at his shoulder.
“Thanks, you too. Want one ?” Holding out the packet, he feels himself slumping down onto Miles, chuckling at his loss of balance.
Miles laughs while automatically propping and doing the leaning for the both of them, and somehow freeing a cigarette at the same time.
“You have a talent there Mr. Miles”, Alex can’t get over how light headed he feels. ”But I don’t have a lighter.”
“I’ll light this from yours then”, and Miles cupped Alex’s shaking hands to shelter the faltering embers.
