"I hope her mother-in-law is horrible this year. I hope they end up snowed in together with no TV, radio, anything that would give them distraction from each other. Than Gates would end up murdering her, we could put the good captain in jail, and this would never happen again."

"Well, you're full of Christmas cheer," Kate deadpanned.

"Rick narrowed his eyes. "We're snowed in a hotel in Schenectady on Christmas Eve. I'm allowed to be Scrooge McDuck."

Kate couldn't help but agree. Gates had sent them to the suburb two hours outside Manhattan to get some photographs from their victim's friend that might identify the stalker that killed them. The case had been cold for for several weeks until the last two days. Rick and Kate booked it outside the city only to find themselves stuck there because of a fast moving storm. Twelve inches had already been dumped, and the snow was expected to stop sometime tomorrow morning. Until then, the roads remained closed due to ice and snow.

"I can't believe this," Rick groaned, laying next to Kate on the soft hotel sheets. He'd shelled out for a huge suite at a local hotel. "This was supposed to be our first family Christmas and we're not even there!"

"I know, Castle," Kate sighed. "Saying it is not going to change anything."

Turning his head, he offered an apology. "I'm sorry. I...I was really looking forward to having you and your Dad over."

She nodded in agreement. It would be the first Christmas Kate and her Dad had spent together in fourteen years. Jim had agreed to come to the loft so they could all open presents together and then have Christmas dinner the next day.

"I know. I'm sorry." Kate continued to look at the ceiling. "I wanted this too." She wished they could at least see everyone...

...And that gave her an idea. Shooting up from the bed, she grabbed her room key before giving Rick a quick, "Be right back." Ten minutes later, she returned with a laptop in hand.

Rick tore his gaze away from the TV. "Where did you get that?"

"The concierge. He said we could borrow for a little while."

"Why?"

Plopping on the bed, Kate opened the screen. She clicked the icon on the desktop before hitting a few keys strokes. "C'mere and you'll see." When he joined her, the video screen opened to the beautiful tree in the loft. Then Alexis' face appeared.

"Hi Kate! Hi Dad!"

"Pumpkin!" He boomed. "How are you, sweetheart?"

"Good. I'm sorry that you guys are stuck out there."

"Us too," Rick replied.

"But we're going to wait until you guys get back tomorrow. I talked to Santa and he said he'd come to the house tomorrow."

Both Rick and Kate smiled warmly at the screen. "Thank you, Alexis," Kate told her sincerely. "That is very sweet."

Then Alexis' eyes widened. "Oh, and Jim came by to drop off the presents and since the roads are icy here too, Grams convinced him to stay here."

"WHAT?!" Both Rick and Kate exclaimed.

"I know, right?!" Alexis agreed. "It was freaky. She just asked once, and boom he's staying here no questions asked. They're watching one of Gram's plays in your office." Then Alexis leaned in close to screen, whispering, "It's really freaky."

Rick turned to Kate with a dropped jaw and all she could do was shrug. When the hell had their parents become such great friends? "You're telling us," she said slowly.

Then Alexis' bright smiled returned. "And Dad, don't worry, our twenty year Christmas Eve dinner together is still in tact." She disappeared from view as the laptop moved from the living room to the dining room, where the table was covered in delicious foods. "Gram! Jim!" came her far away voice. "Kate and Dad are here!" Then Alexis turned back to the screen. "I hope you guys are hungry."

Then Jim and Martha came into view, waving at the webcam. Rick and Kate waved back, and Kate could barely contain the tears in here eyes. This little idea was better than she thought. "It's good to see you, kiddos," Martha grinned. "Now let's all sit and enjoy this lovely dinner."

The laptop remained positioned to where they could see their family, happily passing food around. Rick leaned over, giving Kate a solid kiss. "Thank you, thank you for this."

"You're welcome," Kate whispered. "Merry Christmas."

"Merry Christmas." He leaned again, and they shared a kiss so sweet, Kate felt her heart was about to burst. Unfortunately they were startled apart when a very loud, "HEY!" sounded through the computer.

They both turned in time to see their three loved ones staring disgustingly at the screen. "I never thought I'd have to stay this to you again, Katie-Cat, but no making out at the table!"
