The symbol γ

Is anyone familiar with the use of γ as a symbol for a prefix? I've never come across it before, and according to Wikipedia, γ is used for "antibiotic concentration (1 γ = 1 µg/ml) in microbiology."

I tried searching online for other references to this, but anything I found just linked back to Wikipedia. Can anyone link to any other sources? Or do you know if 1 γ = 1 µg/ml only when referring to antibiotic concentration?

I ask because a paper I read for a project uses this symbol to refer to concentrations of glucose used as assay standards. In case you're interested, the paper is: Park, J. T., and M. J. Johnson. 1949. A submicrodetermination of glucose. J. Biol. Chem. 181:149-151.

Thanks
