“By the way, Teukie hyung, did you watch the video fans sent us? The one Kangin hyung singing Short Journey in the military event. He looked fine, didn’t he?”
As putting his properties into his backpack, Eunhyuk looked at Leteuk and smiled cheerily. He was to leave the dorm in several minutes to join to the promotion of Super Junior M in Taiwan a week behind other members. There were only Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Yesung at the dorm today, and they were all gathering up in the living room, missing the time spending with members unconsciously.
“Whom are you talking about? I don’t understand”, Leeteuk answered shortly, as pouring hot tea into his mug. Eunhyuk frowned and stopped his hands.
“I said Kangin hyung. You heard me.”
“I heard you, but I don’t know such a person.”
Leeteuk said as if it was nothing, and drank down the tea slowly. Eunhyuk felt a cold chill running down his spine. He stood up from the floor and walked to the elder beside the kitchen counter.
“Hyung, what’s wrong with you? It’s Kangin hyung, our member and friend and your…”
Your lover, Eunhyuk said in his head. He knew the leaving of Kangin had been eating Leeteuk’s heart silently no matter how hard he pretended he was dealing fine with it. Eunhyuk was scared if the elder had flipped out finally. Leeteuk patted the younger on the shoulder and laughed casually.
“Don’t get serious, man, it’s just a game. You pretend not knowing Kangin, a person named Kim Youngwoon, so you don’t have to worry or think about him. We don’t have a way to speak to him or to know if he is okay in this circumstance after all, so it’s just a waste of time thinking about him. This is a game I invented. Funny, isn’t it?”, Leeteuk let out a dry laugh and poured another tea to look away from the younger.
“Hyung, it’s not funny at all. It sounds…insane.”
Leeteuk laughed bitterly at the younger’s word, neither affirming nor denying it. Eunhyuk averted his eyes from the elder, feeling uneasy. He didn’t mean to be offensive, but he couldn’t understand how the elder could find this unhealthy ‘game’ funny, and it made him scared. Leeteuk understood the younger’s concern and felt sorry for it in his heart.
“You go now. Manager hyung is waiting outside, right?”
Leeteuk sent Eunhyuk a calm smile, and the latter followed the word and left the room without any more words, his face still clouded with concern.
“Do you think I’m insane, too?”, Leeteuk waited until Eunhyuk was gone and asked Yesung who hadn’t joined to the conversation earlier.
“I don’t judge anyone.”
Yesung replied shortly without raising his face up from a score in his hands. There was a silence between them for a while until Yesung put down the score on his thighs and started speaking abruptly in a voice which was difficult to read the emotion there.
“I don’t know what you think now, because I have not loved someone like you love Youngwoon. I don’t know how strange it is to pretend you don’t know him and try not to think about him, but if it lessens your pain even a little, then I don’t think that’s wrong. You should do whatever makes you feel happy and easy, because I think that is what Youngwoon hopes now.”
Yesung spoke at one burst and stopped as suddenly as he had started. He remained silent as if reviewing his own remarks in his head, then returned his attention to the score like nothing had happened.
Leeteuk felt tears welling up in his eyes. He had banned himself to cry in front of the members long ago, but he couldn’t help it now.
“Thank you.”
“I don’t understand what you’re thanking me for”, Yesung replied uninterestedly.
“Still. Let me thank you”, Leeteuk smiled, “I think Youngwoon must be really happy having such a great friend like you.”
“I’m not sure. He hits me.”
Yesung frowned, and Leeteuk laughed out at the statement, wiping off the tears from his eyes. Life was so mean to him, and sometimes he thought he couldn’t bear the pains any more. But everytime he was lost in the bottomless swamp of despair, the members were there to push his back and help him take another step forward. That was why he could survive each day painfully yet certainly.
Yesung went back to his own world and started humming the soft melody. Leeteuk relaxed in the chair, closed his eyes and allowed himself bathed in the memory of his lover only for this precious moment.
