HISTORY OF GUNS
ISSUE SIX: ARCHIVE ONE
Lineout Records

So will the new album come first, or an Archive Two, which the title of this surely promises? I cannot tell you this, for their world is one of mystery, but here we are again with another freebie CD bringing together a rich array of past glories, or monstrosities, because they have now been going a fair while, so they can barely close the closet for skeletons.

‘Sunday Lunchtime (A Family Portrait)’ from “The Mirror Pond” era appears to be some kind of rotting ambient; blink with dyspepsia and you’ve missed it, but with pretty keyboards and a machine gun beat setting up an incandescent rhythmic pasture through which the instruments perform like rutting tractors ‘Floods Back’ makes quite an impact. ‘Jezebel And The Philistines’ is a crude fetish offering from (whisper it) The Meads Of Ashphodel’s debut album and this is a HOG mix. ‘Plan X/Requiem’ are nicely cutting, like a priest’s secret diary detailing waking up in bed next to an insatiable android, while the briefly chuckling squiggles of ‘Druid’ passes by amiably. ‘Soaked’ almost shows a sweeter, poppy side, the cruelly vivacious ‘Jumping Under Cars’ is excitably addled, and ‘Grab At Hold’ pulls you down some playfully lit, angular musical corridors, yet retains a rather gorgeous flow. (They said bollocks.)

‘Flashes Of Light - Part Three’ starts with am ambient opening which does swarm, then it rumbles on through its jumble, Del producing his T S Eliot-on-meths display which is impressive, making for a fitting finish when you know it recently came to light that in the original draft for the final episode of X Files Mulder was supposed to find the truth was out actually there, written down on a sheet of rice paper, which Del stuffed into his mouth and swallowed, then began to laugh, while staring, as Mulder backed away nervously and the credits rolled, with Del continuing to laugh, unnervingly. The corporation refused to broadcast that, so it is perhaps ironic than Gillian Anderson is down to play Max Rael in the movie of their life.
