We’ve just been down to Southsea to see one of Lynda’s best singing mates in a performance of Oliver! during which one of the actors made a seriously unfortunate mistake. When the old codger who has taken Oliver under his wing, coincidentally reuniting him with his true family (Dickens’ naffest move ever), and has the lad checked over he confides in a clearly sceptical doctor, who believes Oliver to be nothing but a chancer, that he’s grown attached to him. Curiously, on this occasion, he stunned all present by proudly admitting, “I have become quite attracted to him.”

A deafening silence ensued.
