I finished Fallout 3 a while ago. Something that I've noticed that has been somewhat of a trend in games these days, particularly the "epic" ones like Mass Effect, GTA4, etc, is that the main game (i.e. everything that is not optional in order to progress and beat it) has been extremely short ( Read more... )

I sort of like the trend of the main game being short but the full game being long. Last game I played was Final Fantasy XII, and I did maybe 2-3 hours of side quests before I realized how tedious they were. The game still took me around 50 hours to complete! I can see your point about how the optional content is too disjointed from the main story, but in FFXII, I felt they really dragged things out by including so much in the main story.

Anyway, I don't want any game to HAVE to take 50 hours, because I have to beat the game after a certain point. I say make the game shorter, and then let me decide if I want to spend more time on it.

Hmm, I've been developing a rather lengthy post about a similar subject myself. Thief!

But basically I'm siding with Vinnie. I still haven't finished FFXII. Part of that was timing (got married, moved, now have a kid, so no time for FFXII), but I'd stopped playing it long before then.

The issue you note with Fallout 3 has also come to my attention, but more with respect to Prince of Persia. All the additional DLC is available only to the console versions. Not to the PC version.

I think 'epic' gaming as you've described it is making a hard right turn towards consoles. It'll be interesting to see how Activision/Blizz respond to that. D3 and SC2 will combat the trend, if it is a trend. But if it is a trend, how long can they remain the only 'epic' manufacturers on a platform?
