Just followed you back here from your comment on my journal, and I agree with most of what you've said here - except that I still very much enjoyed the last three episodes even though they could have done SO much more with Jack. I was very disappointed by LotTL on first watching, mainly because of the absense of Jack and (virtually) of the Doctor, but on rewatching there's still a lot I like and Simms really does carry the episode.
Re. the Face of Boe thing, I rewatched this ep a couple of days ago and I'm absolutely convinced it has to be Jack having a joke on the Doctor. Jack's all ready to take off, has said his goodbyes, saluted and started to walk away, and then he turns back and asks what happens if he gets really old??? Don't tell me he hasn't been thinking about that for 140 years - he would have asked sooner! And that is a really awkward lead-in to him reminiscing about being a poster boy. And as he's telling this little story, his eyes are all twinkly and shifty and he keeps looking like he's trying not to grin too much, and then he gives the punchline and turns and goes straight away without giving the Doctor and Martha time to take it in and call him on it.
Not to mention the fact that there was NO WAY he didn't hear Martha talking aobut the Face of Boe in Utopia.
So imo, it was either a joke, or it was just really bad writing and JB was doing his best with it.
I'm glad you did. :) Welcome, make yourself comfortable, don't mind the dust. ;)

I'll probably enjoy rewatching "Utopia" (supposed to be airing here on Sept. 17th) and I'll probably rewatch the Jack bits in "The Sound of Drums", but even a couple of months later, I have no wish to watch the finale again, any of it. I think I'll probably watch the 4th series, but right now, it'll be more out of habit/a couple of things sound interesting, rather than any real desire to see what's going to happen next on the show, and that's a shame, since I've enjoyed it for so long.

Heh, thanks for taking one for me. *grin* [Not that you knew at the time that you were doing it for me.] Yeah, I'm totally willing to write the comment off as a joke, JB doing the best he could with it, and that it was really awkwardly written (reminds me of the 2nd glove possibility/stop watch conversation in "They Keep Killing Suzie", oddly enough, the awkward juxtaposition of Jack's salute/goodbye and the FoB mention), but everything around it just bugs me. I have no wish to see the Doctor deliberately take away Jack's ability to travel anywhere/anywhen he wants (although yes, I can certainly see why it's needed, it'd be too much of a deus ex machina to have Jack able to use it in TW). So much of it could have been better written, just keeping the characters in mind. *sigh* Another thing I would have liked to have seen, did the TARDIS have any kind of reaction to Jack being inside her, after she was fixed? Did Jack grab a new, clean shirt from the TARDIS wardrobe or what? Can't see him wanting to shower and clean up on The Valiant. I would have liked to have seen the Doctor showing some concern for Jack... but then, I've already said that in my original post.
