I fully support a person's right to focus on the negative. However, sometimes lying to yourself can make at least part of the lie a reality. I don't think optimism should be shoved down anyone's throat. It has to be something that comes from within to be effective. I am by nature a very negative person. Yet, when I see someone who has every reason to be depressed and angry who is happy despite it all I am inspired. Having friends like that (who aren't pushy, telling you you need to to be happy, but just accept everything live throws at them in stride and respond by spreading love) is something I have found helpful to balance myself out. One of my friends has every reason to hate life. He's had diabetes since he was 23. He was alone when his mother, the only constant person in his life died of cancer and had to take care of all the arrangements by himself. He got married and a few months later his pregnant wife said she wanted a divorce and refused to keep the baby. His father is a US citizen, but he had to spend 9 years dealing with
