Nalda Said
Stuart David

Lovely.  That's the first word I can think to describe this book.  Although the writer is a member of the famous musical group Belle & Sebastian, the book stands alone as a wonderful tale of a lost child.  Nalda, the unnamed main character's aunt, informs him at an early age that he has a jewel inside of him that others will try to steal.  He then goes through his life truly believing this.

I came upon this book at the Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle.  I noticed that it was by written a member of Belle & Sebastian and figured that was why they had displayed it with the other notable books of the week.  I almost passed it up because of this.  I decided to at least read the first chapter, and I am glad I did!  I could not stop at the first chapter as the sad words and thoughts of this young boy drew me in.  The main character, naive and shy, seemed to express entirely how befuddled life had left me.

So, if you're looking for a sad yet ambrosial story, I suggest you don't pass this one up.
