The Band Thing

It's a-happening. My little roadhouse-rock outfit is coming together a bit at a time. Bass player and I have been getting together on a semi-regular basis to get some songs down and to get my vocals back up to speed (I've been singing backing vocals in bands for the past 5 years, but I'll be out front in this band). Something off Will the Wolf Survive by Los Lobos would fit. I Got Loaded, maybe, or Don't Worry Baby.

And there is a GREAT song by Billy Joe Shaver that I've been waiting to hear a rockin' country band (or country-ish rock band) cover...Fast Train to Georgia. Find a version that has the late, lamented Eddy Shaver (BJ's son, dead of an OD) on lead guitar. It rocks, it twangs, it amuses...it does it all.

Don't Worry Baby is on the loooong wish list of songs. Good call. FYI: I present David and Louie from Los Lobos doing an acoustic show in January.

I'll investigate Fast Train to Georgia. Is Billy Joe Shaver the guy that wrote songs for Waylon Jennings?

Yeah, he wrote Black Rose and a ton of other Waylon stuff.

That's amazing, but is that the least enthusiastic crowd shot you've ever seen or what?

It seems like it's cut in from a different show or something.

That video is pretty cool but the version I have (from an Oxford American sampler some years back) is 100 times more energetic and furious and train-barely-on-the-rails.

I Got Loaded is a great crowd-pleaser. That whole album is cover worthy.

Not surprisingly, songs about drinking are coming up a lot. I want to work up Gram Parsons' "Ooo Las Vegas" ("first time I lose I drink whiskey, second time I lose I drink gin, third time I lose I drink anything, 'cause I think I'm gonna win!")
