Waiting for Phillip

Sep 16, 2006 16:30

I feel like we're constantly waiting for Phillip to come home.

Phillip is my younger brother - a year and two weeks younger, to be exact. People often mistake us for twins, and we do act the part - finishing each other's sentences and even using a language of our own, one that tends to leave out major verbs and nouns.

He left for the National Guard on Tuesday. We thought he'd be able to call when he reached Fort Leonardwood, but so far he hasn't.

I keep thinking, oh, we're not having dinner yet because we're waiting for Phillip to get home. Hey, that was funny, I can't wait 'til Phillip gets home so I can tell him about it. Where is Phillip, anyway?

Oh yeah . . .

We took a leaf out of the kitchen table, since it's only the four of us now, three during the week when Dad's out driving. He's a truck driver, so he's only home on weekends, you see.

I constantly call Nathan (my other younger brother) Phillip. It doesn't help that he keeps getting taller and wears Phillip's old clothes. Last year while I was away at college, he grew an inch every two weeks, reaching my height (5'7") by Thanksgiving. If he does the same thing this year . . . yeah, he'll be nearly Phillip's 6'2" by Thanksgiving as well. Scary.

Hopefully he'll call soon.
