Math. Ugh.

I'm not entirely sure if anyone reads this yet, but I'd just like to say that unless you're really interested in math or knitting, I'd ignore this one. It's just to get my thoughts organized.

So, I'm making this bunny hat (with ears) for my friend Jen for Christmas, so, because I'm just about out of yarn for the scarf, I'm taking a break to figure it out.

I'm using Russian Winter from "Stitch and Bitch Nation" for the main part of the hat and the ears from Bunny Hat of the same book. Russian Winter calls for a yarn that knits up at gauge of less than three stitches to the inch - I'm going to use a yarn that knits up at four stitches.

So, to begin with, they CO 8 st, which is 3.2 in. So I need to CO 12.8, or 13. I'll make that 14 to keep it even. That's only slightly larger, 3.5 in. Three rws later they inc 2 st, so that's 4 in, which is also an inc of 2 st at my gauge. That's convenient. Then they rep until they have 16 st, 6.4 in, or 25.6 st at mine. We'll call that 26, so we'll have to inc 10 st over 3 reps.

That's . . . annoying.

Let's think of this another way. Their row gauge is 3.5 rws/in. My row gauge is 6 rws/in. They inc 8 sts over 16 rws, or 4.6 in. So I need to inc 12 in over . . . 27.6 rws. Getting out my handy dandy magic formula, I get to do a ton more math -_-;;

First, I reduce 27.6 to the next even number down, which is 26. I only need 6 rws for the actual inc. Dividing the two, I get 4.3. I need the first even number lower and higher than the number, which is 4 and 6. Then it's 4 and 6, which is 24. Then 26 - 24 is 2. 2 by 2 is 1. So I increase every 6 rws 1x. Which leaves 5 inc every 4 rws. 5 and 4 is 20, and 6 by 1 is 6, the two together are 26. Alright.

So far our pattern is:

CO 14 st
Row 1: P
Row 2: K
Row 3: P
Row 4: K2, inc L, k to last 2 st, inc R, k2.
Repeat 4x
Row 21: P
Row 22: K
Row 23: P
Row 24: K
Row 25: P
Row 26: K2, inc L, k to last 2 st, inc R, k2

Then it's work even in St st for 2 rws, or 1.75 in. 10.5 rws. Well make it .

Work even for 9 rws.

Now we have to dec the opposite way, ideally, that's:

Row 36: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Row 37: P
Row 38: K
Row 39: P
Row 40: K
Row 41: P
Row 42: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Row 43: P
Row 44: K
Row 45: P
Rep 4x
Row 63: P

Total of 63 rows. Which is 10.5 in. Hers has a total of 25 rows for 7.1 in, which means we've gone wrong somewhere, but bugger it. It' won't kill Jen if it's 2 in longer on either side.

Next, she picks up 40 st, which is 64 st for me, or 32 st on each side. Then we St st for 7 in, BO with larger needle. Take deep breaths, eat chocolate. Make ties, ears, pompoms.

Or . . . I could just make the baby hat in a giant gauge . . .
