Discaimer: I do not own Eunhyuk or Donghae or any other idols that appear through this story. However, the plot as well as everything written here is born from my mind
I looked at Donghae with a small smile and stood up. He stood up right next to me and began leading the way. We walked down the path, towards the town center. The lack of conversation surprised me so; I peeked at Donghae and saw how calm he looked which surprised me. Then I saw his hands that were continuously being wiped against his jeans in a nervous gesture. I looked away and bit my lip to hold back a smile before clearing my throat and deciding to start a small conversation.
“Umm…Donghae, where are we going today?” I asked looking at him. He looked back at me for a couple seconds before replying.
“Well, today, we are going to be together the entire day, from breakfast to dinner. So first, we’re going to a little café to grab some breakfast. Then we’ll head over to the arcade I guess to play around… After that we’ll go shopping, if you want to and finally, I have a surprise for you. So you have to make sure to eat a really good breakfast, ok?” As he said the last part, Donghae stopped in front of a glass door that led to True Blue café.
I slowly walked in as Donghae held the door open and took in the entire café. The floor, ceiling and walls were all wooden and tables were polished wood as well. Most of the seats were small cushioned chairs and above each table there was a small hanging pot. Each table had a different flower growing out of the pot. They also had a small center lamp with brightness controls so that the customers could set the individual moods for their table.
Donghae led me to one of the tables and set the mood on dim. The light glowed gently in between us and I looked down, because in that light, he looked perfect. He seemed to have noticed me looking down and slowly reached a hand over to my side and pushed my bangs over to one side causing me to look up. Both of us were still staring at each other when a small voice interrupted us.
“Hi, and welcome to True Blue café, I’ll your waiter for the day, Sungmin!” The man, Sungmin, quickly welcomed us. He looked somewhat feminine but seemed to have muscles as well. He was waiting next to our table with a feathered pink pen and a small pink notepad waiting for us to order. I was just about to point out the lack of menus when Donghae spoke.
“Hi. We’d like one strawberry milkshake, one iced frappuccino and two breakfast pancakes please,” he ordered without bothering to ask me what I wanted. I decided to disregard the fact considering I would have most likely ordered the exact same thing if I had the menu and decided to sulk slightly at him. He turned back to me after confirming the order with Sungmin before turning around and seeing me sulking.
“Aww c’mon Hyukkie, don’t sulk ok? I brought you here because I really want you to try this food, so you have to eat it,” he whined slightly. I sighed and nodded, agreeing to let it go, but he seemed to have other ideas. Donghae continued teasing me about various things including the ‘sulking for food’ incident as he called it until Sungmin came back and placed our order on the table.
I grabbed the strawberry milkshake and brought it close to me before taking a sip. As the slightly thick liquid entered my mouth, I closed my eyes and hummed a little at the taste. It was perfect, not so sweet that it automatically made people want to puke but not sour either. It was the perfect smoothie. I opened my eyes to see an amused Donghae looking at me with his iced frappuccino in his hand. I quickly grabbed the breakfast pancake and began eating it as well. The entire breakfast was fun and light hearted with conversation flowing easily. I could tell that today was going to be enjoyable.
After the breakfast, I learnt even more surprising things about Donghae as well. We first went to the arcade where I learnt that the brunette nearly always lost in games, no matter which side he would on and also that he would attempt anything to get a Nemo stuffed toy. I also learned that he is very competitive and when he did win (which was rare) he would do a small victory dance.
Shopping came after breakfast and here I learned that Donghae had a questionable sense of fashion; if all the plaid clothes he brought were an indication to what he liked to wear. I on the other hand, showed him how I can be a little bit on the fashionista side as well as the cheap side, when I went through the clothes he choose to try on and picked out only the really good looking ones for him to do so.
From there, we went to the mall’s food court to have lunch before heading out for a small peaceful walk. Donghae and I were discussing the pros and cons of manga when my date suddenly stopped.
“We’re here,” Donghae explained as he quickly moved behind me to cover my eyes. I flailed my arms slightly as I panicked about having suddenly lost my sense of sight. Donghae wrapped his free arm around me, shushing me and calming me down quietly. When he felt that I was calm enough, he started leading me to my ‘surprise’. Had the person who covered by eyes been anybody else, I knew that the panic I would have felt would have caused my fire to come out, but it was Donghae and something always told me to trust him with everything I had. I had trouble letting everything go, but I was getting there…slowly.
When we walked about five steps, I felt Donghae move slightly before we started walking again. I felt the cold air stop hitting me and I knew that we had entered a building. We continued walking slowly for another ten steps or so before we stopped. I felt Donghae remove his hands as he went to stand in front of me.
“Keep your eyes closed until I tell you to open them, alright?” he asked as I nodded my head and closed my eyes tightly. I felt the pressure of his hands move away and I waited patiently despite being really curious as to what is going on. Two minutes later, there was a soft sound-smooth like a piano. I really wanted to open my eyes and see what was going on, but I decided to wait until I got Donghae’s command.
“Open your eyes Hyukkie.” His voice called out gently. I opened my eyes slowly and gasped as I looked around. Three of the walls were covered with ceiling-to-floor mirrors and one of the walls had a small curtain in the center presumably covering a window. Opposite to the window wall was a wall that had a barre, covering the entire wall, ready for a group of ballerinas to command practice and in the cent of all this stood my guardian angel.
Donghae stood there with a small smile on his face, a rose in one of his hand and a remote in the other. I walked up to him and he smiled wider as he handed me the rose. I looked down shyly and waited, wondering what he would do next. The background music changed to a power ballad sung by Aiden & Spencer Lee; I wanna love you.
“Dance with me,” Donghae asked me as he put the remote on the floor and slid it towards one of the mirrors.
”There’s no girl…” I said hesitatingly. I had seen the dance once when it played on TV as I walked past the convenience store. The TV was often my only connection to the latest music.
“Then we’ll make up our own dance to it. “ Donghae stated as he used two fingers to lift my chin to meet his eyes. I smiled and nodded softly. So we danced.
We danced to many songs by the duo and finally; after finishing their latest dance song I wanna dance, a soft ballad came on titled Love that I need, still by Aiden and Spencer Lee. Donghae quickly grabbed my waist and pulled me close. Once I was close enough, he took my hands and draped them across his shoulders while tightening his arms around my waist. He was slowly rocking us from side to side as I leaned my head on his shoulder and his head leaning on top or my head. The atmosphere was perfectly romantic, but there were two questions that I had to ask.
“Donghae…”
“Hmm?”
“Why did you want to court me? Someone who didn’t even tell you his name until the second day of knowing him? Wouldn’t you rather date a normal boy or a girl and have a regular relationship?” I asked worry lacing my voice as I buried my face into his shoulder. I felt his him tighten his grip my waist and he let out a sigh before replying.
“Hyukkie, what makes our relationship abnormal? Besides, after meeting you, there is no way I could date anybody else. The first look I had of you had me mesmerized and it felt as though we were made for each other, two halves of the same heart and… I already knew your name before I came to talk to your on my first day.” Towards the end his voice changed from earnest to cheeky and I didn’t need to look at his face to know that he was grinning. I wanted to look at that beautiful smile but since I knew I was blushing, I decided against it and instead asked my second question.
“Why do you want to go out with someone as ugly and… and as abnormal as me? You’re the school’s handsome flower-boy. So why choose the ugly nerd?” I asked pulling away slightly so that I could take look at his face. His eyes were wide open as he looked at me shocked for a couple of seconds after I asked my question, then he turned me around. In the mirror, I could see how perfect he looked with his slightly shaggy brown hair tied into a small ponytail, a basketball jersey shirt that showed off the muscles in his arms, blue skinny jeans and a pair of doc martins. Making me stand next to him surely was like putting a rock near a polished diamond.
“Hyukjae, I don’t know what you see whenever you look in the mirror but I can tell you what I see. I see platinium blonde hair that adds to the ethereal beauty of your fair skin and frames your sharp jaw line to perfection. I see almond eyes that are the color of the purest amber that are often covered up by your bangs, something that I find unfair since your eyes are your most beautiful and expressive feature. I see two full lips that are the color of lotus petals and often turn to a rose-red color since you tend to bite them so often. I see a thin body with a slender waist that many girls in our school envy and fool the eyes of many strangers since they don’t know about the muscles that hide underneath. I see the way the corner of your eyes crinkle and your lips lift up to show your gums when you smile completely and honestly. None of that is the most important thing though. The most amazing thing about you is your personality. You are shy, sweet and caring yet at the same time, you are a perfectionist, slightly bossy and very gullible. Your eyes light up when you are dancing, or talking about the songs that you’ve composed. All of this makes you, you and makes me love you and want to stand next to you for as long as I can.”
By the time he was halfway through the speech, I could feel my eyes tear up and when he was finished, I couldn’t even see the mirror since the tears were making my vision blurry. I closed my eyes slightly knowing that my orbs had changed color and one tear fell down and another followed. I felt the happiness overwhelm me and I bit my lips hoping to prevent any sobs from escaping. Donghae’s hand lightly caressed my cheeks before moving his hands to wipe away my tears. I brought my hands up to my eyes to wipe my tears in attempt to stop them. When my tears finally stopped and I felt that my eyes had returned back to their normal color, I took a deep breath and started speaking.
“Donghae is like that as well. I see a physical presence standing next to me with brown hair and a fringe that frames a soft face and eyes that remind me of melted chocolate and capture me every time I look at them. I see lips that are almost always smiling that perfect crooked smile and hands that are the obvious result of hard work. It’s these hands that I trust to wrap around me and protect me through thick and thin. I go a little beyond what I physically see and find eyes that hold multiple emotions at one time, eyes that can show a person exactly what is going on in your heart and mind, but at the same time, can become emotionless or stuck on a ‘happy’ mode to keep the people that you don’t trust, out. Inside you, I see a big heart that loves many people at the same time. This heart is wounded though and still healing from the wound left by the loss of your father. I can clearly see the laughter and happiness in your eyes when you are talking about your family and the passion that pours out of you when you are singing or dancing. I can see the amount of concentration you put on a musical score that you are composing and the excitement that takes over your face once it is done. I also see the childish side of you. The side of you that loves cuddling and almost forgets that personal space exists. I see the child who sees innocence and simplicity in the world, a hyper ball of energy with seemingly contagious laughter. I see the cute side of you that comes out unknowingly when you’re trying to get your way or sulking when you don’t get it. These are the things that I love about you and I hope that you won’t mind me standing next to you in the future.”
Somewhere in between my speech, I had turned my gaze away from the mirror to look at him instead. I watched as his eyes widened more the longer I spoke. By the time I was finished, he had buried his face in the crook of my neck and wrapped his arms around me tightly. I could both feel and hear the soft “thank you” he was saying since his lips were pressed against the skin of my neck, creating a tingling feeling when he said it.
After a couple minutes, we untangled ourselves from the tangle of limbs that we had become and quietly moved around the dance room setting everything back into its original position and putting the CD away. When we were done, we walked out of the studio building and onto the streets with a comfortable silence surrounding us. As we were walking, I felt Donghae’s hand lightly brush up against mine before he grabbed my hand and interlaced our fingers. My eyes widened and I looked at him only to see a content smile on his face. I tightened my grip on his hand and I moved a step closer feeling my face flush. I looked at him once again, noticing a light blush painting his cheeks as well.
We had dinner at a small restaurant nearby where Donghae had already reserved a table. Here I learned even more things about Donghae. I learned that the studio we were at earlier belongs to his childhood friend, Yunho, and that he had told his mom and brother that he was going on a date. He told me how he got a lot of money in return so that he could pamper the lucky boy. When I asked him how his mom knew it was a boy, he said that he would talk about me often without using my name. I blushed at the thought and fiddled with my spoon until Donghae started teasing me, making me forget about the awkward atmosphere almost instantaneously.
Dinner was over soon and both of us walked back to the park in silence. Our hands were intertwined and there was barely any space between us. By the time we reached the curb where we had to split up, I was walking with my head on Donghae’s shoulder and he had his arm wrapped around my waist. At the curb we moved apart but stood uncomfortably. I knew for a fact that I wasn’t ready for us to separate. I looked down at the sidewalk and attempted to gather some courage for what I was about to do.
“So…umm…I guess I’ll see you on Mon-oomph!” Donghae was forced to cut his sentence short when I moved forward and pressed my lips against his. I held the kiss for a couple seconds before pulling away and looking back down at the sidewalk. I felt him cupping my face with his hands and lifting my face to meet his.
“Why the kiss Hyukkie?” Donghae asked, gently caressing my cheeks his palm. I leaned into his touch, slowly closing my eyes at the warmth his hand provided before opening one eye and responding to his statement.
“That was my way of saying that your courting was very effective,” I whispered. Donghae held my red cheeks for a little while longer before leaning forward and resting his forehead on mine. He then leaned forward a little and pecked my lips multiple times. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the pampering he was giving me.
“This means that we are going steady…and that we are exclusive,” Donghae stated, letting go of my face to wrap his arms around my waist. He pulled me closer, until there was almost no space in between our bodies before continuing to speak.
“I’m very possessive so you are mine…and no one is allowed to flirt with you alright?” I laughed slightly before responding.
“Who would flirt with me in our school, Hae? And if I am yours, it means that you are mine.” Donghae smiled and nodded before pulling away. The warmth he offered left me and I felt a sudden chill crawl down my spine, I ignored it thinking it was the chilly wind. I waved to him before turning around and walking down the street. I was halfway down the block when I heard a shout behind me and turned around.
“SEE YOU ON MONDAY!!!” Donghae shouted before turning around and high-tailing it out of here. I laughed at his craziness before continuing my walk. I was sure that nothing could make this day go bad…I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I reached home and slowly opened the door and stepped in, only to be thrown down to the ground at the impact of a slap. I held my cheek and looked up to see my father staring down at me and my mother standing behind him looking disgusted at the sight of me. I stood up slowly, making sure not to look into their eyes, since that would just anger them even more.
“So, you little fag, had a wonderful day showing your worthless mug to the entire town? Or did you not do that? Did you just have breakfast and spend the rest of the day warming up beds for strangers like a little whore? Or were you worse than that…did you open your legs for free like a cock loving slut little bitch?” My father pushed me down to the floor when he said the word fag and each question asked afterword was emphasized with a kick. I heard small whimpers leave my mouth and desperately tried curling myself into a ball with a hand covering my mouth to prevent any noise from escaping.
“Kick him harder, sweetheart. This little slut is a thief. You won’t believe how much the whore has been stealing from us. The amount of food that’s missing from our pantry is crazy. It would be enough to feed an entire family for a month,” my mother said, smirking evilly in my direction. I looked down once again…I knew that this wasn’t going to end anytime soon.
It was three hours later that I managed to drag my bruised body up the stairs. I had whip marks on my back and was almost naked, my boxers had been left on; my dad’s only mercy. I somehow made it to my room and closed the door, but as too tired to crawl into the bed. So I quietly released my wings and cured up into a sleeping position with the wings forming a protective barrier around me.
I woke up a couple hours later to the sound of the door knob jiggling. I gasped and pulled my wings back in just as the door opened. My father barged in and caught my wings as they were folding away and smirked heavily. The leer in his eyes confirmed my fears, tonight was going to be a painful one.
Soon, although not soon enough for me, it was Monday morning and I was limping down the street in an attempt to get to school. I doubted I was in any condition to go to school, but it was better than home any day. At school, I could be ignored and no one would think anything if they saw me sit in class without moving.
I was almost at the park when I saw the silhouette of a person leaning against the street light. When I got closer I realized it was Donghae. My vision was starting to seep with blackness and I knew I could trust him to take care of me once I got his attention.
I slowly moved my feet and thumped slightly harder on the ground than I was previously, sending multiple needles of pain shooting through my leg. Blackness engulfed more of my vision but I still managed to see him turn toward me with a smile, one that disappeared quickly when he saw my condition. His concerned face and a shout of my name is the last thing I remembered before giving into the darkness.
“HYUKJAE!”
