R.I.P. Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett

Jun 26, 2009 02:55

It's been awhile since I wrote in this...but this was too important not to....

OMG....Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson in one day???  And Ed McMahon the other day?? What's going on Hollywood??  The icons are dying...I'll admit I was sad to hear about Farrah, but MJ dying was just a shock to my system. I grew up listening to his music, on the the Motown Sound and The Jackson 5 and all.  I heard about it from one of my co-workers at work, thought my coworker was kidding, and even called my mom to confirm it.  It was just saddening to hear....another icon gone....

The man was only 50.  Life is truly short when you think about that.  My dad was young too when he passed, and he was only in his 60s.  He was also an MJ fan.  I wonder what he would have said if he were still alive to see this. It still hasn't hit home for me about MJ dying...maybe it's cuz his legend feels so big, its like he'll never really be gone. I remember watching his music vids when I was little, listening to his songs on the radio...I even remember when he did the Moonwalk on tv for the first time ever, in 1984, and I was only 3 (yes i have that good a memory, lol).  I was at my aunt's house when I saw that, and I was blown away.  And then when I saw the Smooth Criminal video, and the lean forward move (y'all know what I'm talking about), my friends and I thought he was invincible.  The boys in my class at school kept trying to practice it, and falling flat on their faces all the time... like we would ever figure out how it was done...the man was that good. To capture the hearts and imaginations of an entire generation of kids and adults is just legendary.  And that's the only word I can use for him. Legendary.  To be able to influence different genres of music, inspire different styles of dance, and just speak to all groups of people and races, is just unmatched in its territory of what anyone else was/has been able to do in all these years.  No matter what kind of legal trouble he's been in, guaranteed if you asked most people, they would still buy tickets to his concert in record numbers.  People loved him that much that, to overlook his strange and quirky ways, just to enjoy his music.  Because that's what it was really about...the music.  It brought people together to the one place where everyone can connect on a basic level.  And in that way that he did bring people together, everyone felt that similiar connection in just feeling the music, and just generally having a good time at any one of his concerts.  I'm sure in some ways, it was like having a spiritual conversion of some sort.  I remember seeing concerts on tv, and people passing out in the audience because the experience was that intense for them.  His music spoke to everyone in a different way...and that's what music should be able to do for people.

I must say MJ was a huge part of my pop idols while I was growing up in the 80s/90s.  Anyone from that time frame should be able to say the same thing.  My dad had his music recorded on tapes, we had a few Jackson 5 records, and MJ records too.  I even have a copy of the Moonwalker movie...on VHS (cuz we only had VCRs in the 90s people!).  As I sit here watching the coverage on CNN and MTV, with his videos and music, I must say one thing...that man certainly got anyone he ever wanted to be in one of his videos any time he wanted. Any celebrity he wanted, they would work with him.  Watch the videos for " Remember The Time, Liberian Girl, You Rock My World,' and quite a few others, and their packed with guest appearances from other celebrities.  I don't know any other musical artist that's been able to do that in my lifetime.

The loss is truly a great one....to pop culture and music most especially. And quite devastating for his friends and family. And the fans...the very backbone of support for his vast musical career, we will be the ones that will carry a lifetime of memories of a legend and a talent that will truly be unmatched for probably the rest of our lives.  I'm sure its like what Elvis was to our parents.

A Revolutionary...an Artist...a Legend lost too soon.

MJ...the void you left will truly be felt in the long times ahead.  I hope you find peace where ever you are now, and have found your NeverLand in the the sky...where you'll never have to grow up, and continue to enjoy your childhood.

You Will Be Missed.

Only know wherever I go
Were as close as two friends can be
There have been others
But never two lovers
Like music, music and me..."
