Tattoo thoughts

So, I think I've thought about it long enough (um, several years): It's time for me to get a tattoo. But considering that this is a forever decision, I'm checking in with my friends list for opinions/advice. Not that any else's decision will be binding here, but I want to get some input to make sure I've thought through anything that might turn out ( Read more... )

I think such a light mauve would be hard to see on skin, but perhaps if you did black with mauve outlines or mauve letters with black shadows to define them a bit more? Although I'm not sure if I like how that would look.

I am a fan (obviously) of the plain black ink.

Have you thought about how large you want it? I've been told that if you make the font too small--with thin lines--it often fades very fast.

If you bring in design ideas good artists can play with them a lot and give you something that fits what you want best--plus they know how it is going to look on your body (curving one way or the other etc).

I think it is awesome how much you've thought about the meaning behind even the font!

I edited the post to show the color I'm thinking of. Is that better? I sort of like the idea that mauve is more "natural" -- but I don't want something that will fade away immediately.

Thanks for your input -- I know you know a lot about this stuff!

Size-wise, I'm not 100% sure. I think I want it around the size of ... I dunno... a little taller than a standard band-aid, and little less wide. But I'm not sure. I think I will need to consult with a tattoo artist to get the size to work with the curves of my arm.

Do you recommend anyone in particular around here?

Andy Ringo or Lars at Evolved are really good.

I still think having text in all mauve won't look the way you're thinking...maybe try a marker on your arm to see what it will look like...check it from a distance and up close.

oh, and here's a Suicide Girl with a tattoo that is similar to what you're thinking of...would u want to see more of their stuff with text tattoos?

I was just looking through the pictures I have saved of SG with cool tattoos...none of them have a color that isn't bold and bright without an outline of black ink to make it more clear. If you were thinking bright red, blue, green, or anything but a pale-ish pink color it would be fine without outlines.

The only real life tattoo I've seen that is comparable is a friend with a tattoo of a lipstick blot on her wrist...it is mauve-ish and fairly visible, but I guess it all depends on how the color works on your particular skin...I think it would show up poorly on my skin, but maybe not on you. Plus, the lips are fairly thick, as compared to thin lettering.

Something to think about, anwyay.

Hmm, well, I always like a suicide girl showing up in my lj, regardless of the situation. :)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm really going to have to talk with a tattoo artist about the color --- I'd REALLY like to do mauve if it will work (maybe make it a little purpler if necessary), but don't want to insist on that if it's going to be faded out.

I know it's kind of silly, but I was talking about tattoo colors and my friend pointed out a birth mark on his finger that was almost a bright pink. (think like the brightish mauve of some people's nipples...). I LOVE the idea of it being almost a color that could exist in nature. My skin is super super light (I can't tan), so mauve may work on me more than it might on some other people. But definitely thanks for the heads up on the colors. I've waited long enough to get this damned tattoo that I want to make sure that it is visible and stays that way. :)

(Perhaps we should have some kind of law school/tattoo advice consortium).
