Yes, I am reading Jane Austen in my spare time.
Laura started, I picked it up, I've now surpassed her bookmark, and I've found a couple things;
Some things never change:
"Mrs. Jennings was a widow... She had only two daughters, both of whom she had lived to see respectably married, and she had now therefore nothing to do but to marry all the rest of the world. In the promotion of this object she was zealously active, as far as her ability reached, and missed no opportunity of projecting weddings among all the young people of her acquaintance."
Translation: After presumably being a meddling old biddy in her daughters' lives, she's now moved on to every other single young person's "happiness," be it her business or not. Sound familiar?
And some things, thankfully, (hopefully?) have:
"'A woman of seven-and-twenty,' said Marianne, after pausing a moment, 'can never hope to feel or inspire affection again; and if her home be uncomfortable, or her fortune small, I can suppose that she might being herself to submit to the offices of a nurse, for the sake of the provision and security of a wife.'"
Translation: Twenty-seven is so OOOLD! I'm Marianne and I'm seventeen and I think that twenty-seven is so OOOOOLD, how could you EVER think that they'd attract a husband at such an ANCIENT age?
Nothing like a little 19th century literature to make you laugh... and be grateful that times have changed! ;)
