Happy December!
You know, it's funny. This year, and the past two years, Dec. 1 has been unseasonably warm here at UConn. It's 55 degrees F here today. And, I know it's weird to remember things like that, but seriously, the reason I do is because I always think to myself, "Oh, it's December! It's gonna be sooooo chilly!" and then I run amok in short sleeves like it's springtime. Oh, Connecticut weather. Making me want to go places without a jacket, even though the minute the sun goes down, I will freeze. :-P lol
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving! Mine was the usual pandemonium that occurs when you cram 30 people (I just counted in my head, there were exactly 29 people and that was mostly just aunts, uncles and FIRST cousins), a dog and a cat into one small-ish house. Good times. :)
The week went by so fast, though. It's hard to believe I had something to do every day, but I did! Most of the first part of the week was spent cleaning and speaking Italian. My mom and I helped a family friend clean out
his mother's house, which was a 3-day ALL DAY job.
This was between Laura and I marching in the Stamford Thanksgiving Day Parade last Sunday (a balloon parade on a slightly smaller scale than Macy's) with I Giullari from Italy, which was a blast (but so cold!) and performing at the dinner dance later that night to celebrate Stamford and Minturno becoming sister cities. It was a lot of fun, I made a lot of new friends and danced the night away with Italian guys! lol! (and girls, too... :-P) Our dance group in America has now been officially invited to go dance at La Sagra Delle Regne in Minturno with them next year, their annual summer harvest festival. I hope I get to go. I'm so pumped.
We also met up with the Italians Tuesday night at the Minturnese club, and the next night at a nightclub in downtown Stamford. When they closed their doors at 12:30, we took them to the diner. I translated menu items. We got home at 3 am. It was a good time, lol!
Friday was study day, and then I saw Kelly!! I met Nikhil!! It was fantastic, I really had a great time. I miss her during the school year.
Then, Saturday I went to New Haven to go see Greg. We always have a nice time together. :) We went Christmas shopping and I got a little bit of a start on it - unlike some people who are almost done, like my sister! - and then when it got dark, we went to the Fantasy of Lights show in East Haven. I hadn't seen anything like it before! You drive through a park that they've set up with elaborate light displays, some of them that reflect the sponsors and some that are just fun holiday scenes. All the lights blink to simulate movement, so there are reindeer jumping and elves playing volleyball, lol! It really put me in the holiday mood.
The only downside of the week was driving home last night. Although it snowed early Sunday morning, it rained for the rest of the day, and it was relentless. The traffic was awful because the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the worst travel day of the year. And the trip that usually takes us only an hour and forty-five minutes to two hours took us over THREE hours to do. Needless to say, it was a late night last night.
(EDIT: Quote of the night, from Mikey: *completely calm* "I've been driving for over 3 hours. I'm going to kill you.")
But, to end on a good note, the UConn Women's Basketball team won again last night! 106-78 against Oklahoma - they're now 7 for 7. It was a fun game, and since ESPN was airing it, the entire student section overflowed into most of the stands behind it. Also, we found an old artificial Christmas tree in Mrs. Van Doren's attic that nobody wanted, so we decorated our little 4-foot Charlie Brown tree and set it in the corner of the room up here. It really is a Charlie Brown Christmas tree - it won't stand up by itself and pieces of it keep falling off, lol. But it brings a little cheer to that corner, lol. :)
YEAR IN REVIEW: Take the first sentence (or two) from the first post of each month of 2008. That's your year in review.
January 2008: I've been volunteering as a student teacher/aide at Toquam for the past week, and for next week.
(Hard to believe that was already almost a year ago. That was SO MUCH FUN. I should do it again!)
February 2008: Gotta tell you about the masquerade ball later....
(Ah, the Carnivale ball! I wonder if they'll host that again this year.)
March 2008: OK, so randomly? Who else is a HUGE dork like myself and absolutely can NOT wait until Enchanted comes out on DVD?
(And now I HAVE it on DVD! Hooray, Enchanted!!!)
April 2008: Holy Shmanolies, it's freakin' WINDY outside and Mother Nature ain't kiddin' around.
(That was Apr. 1, and today is Dec. 1 and it's STILL windy because the wind never lets up at Storrs. I love days like today when there was a rainstorm the day before...the whole campus is littered with broken, windblown unbrellas. It's hilarious. When it comes to umbrellas at Storrs, you either go big or go home, lol)
May 2008: Oh, Lost. You are so addictive.
(It's the truth. I can't wait till it starts up again in January.)
June 2008: Happy June, everyone. Don't care if the season doesn't officially start till the 21st. June is pretty much summer to me.
(LOL about that time of year when I start to get a little giddy. YAY NO SCHOOL even though I work!)
July 2008: Hokay. So. I've been MIA for a while. Work has been quite the interesting place this summer.
(Oh, LBLP. You never cease to amaze me. I can't believe I'm going back to you for the 4th summer straight in 2009.)
August 2008: Hey Howdy Hey!! So I've been back at UConn since Friday.
(Pretty self-explanitory.)
September 2008: Sooooo I start student teaching tomorrow.
(And little did I know what I was getting myself into...lol I love it.)
October 2008: How am I sick again? It's been a month. Jeez.
(Occupational hazard of teaching. The little buggers spread disease like bubonic rats.)
November 2008: Hope everyone had a fantastic Halloween!
(Seriously, I'm STILL super proud of my Carmen Sandiego costume. My hat sits on my desk. XD)
December 2008: My stocking is hung...above my bed in my dorm...with care!! Maybe I'll get some presents! ;)
(Well...will I??? ;) )
