In the end, Jack doesn't have to choose. In the end, he ruins what he has with both of them.
Nancy surprises him at home, while Avery's there (the only slightly positive element: he and Avery are fully clothed). Nancy is the one who seems angrier. Avery seems more hurt. (He thought it would be the other way around.)
In his office the next evening, he tells Lemon: "I still don't know who I would have picked." He offers her a drink when he goes to refill his own; she declines. "I think my openness might be as problematic as your sourness."
"It's really great that you found a way to insult me right now. I was feeling way too awesome about myself."
There's an obvious sadness inherent in her sarcasm. An apology almost comes out, but instead: "I'm simply saying we both need to find a middle ground. We both need to change our attitudes and figure out what it is we want."
This perks her up a bit. "I'm one step ahead of you, buddy. I want... well, a lot of things. You probably don't want to hear all of them, but basically a monogamous guy who will always like me, even when I'm old. And don't say I'm already old. Also, he should have beefy forearms."
"I want..." He thinks about the women he's cared for and looks for similarities, but all they share outside of beauty is what they made him feel: a desire to be connected to another person. "I want to find a woman I'm certain I can't be without."
He wonders when that certainty will come. If he'll recognize it when it does.
"You'll find her. And I'll find my dude." She pauses. "Right?"
He sits next to Liz. Nods. "We have plenty of time to get what we want."
