The Year in Review

Dec 27, 2010 22:30

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?

Quit a job without having another one lined up. Been a full-time housewife and SAHM. Had a plaster cast. Probably a bunch of electrical stuff, but it all feels like so long ago.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't make New Year's Resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes! My friend N in Wellington, and I'm thrilled. She and her husband have been trying for a long, long time to have a baby. My friend S in Dunedin, and my friend S in Wellington.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

I don't think so.

5. What countries did you visit?

Australia, for Worldcon. Now THAT was a party!

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

A pony and a plastic rocket.

7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

5 June, as it was the day I quit my job.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Using common sense and some tricks I learned at the Sustainable Living Course to cut our grocery bills by about 25% and electricity bills by 30 - 50%.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Some things happened that I'd rather they hadn't, but I'm reluctant to call anything a "failure".

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Suspected broken scaphoid bone in my left wrist (turned out to be sprained, thank ghu). A bit of whimsicality in the brain pan.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

A place in the Sustainable Living course. Beyond valuable.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

The DH's for continuing to support me through some tough times. The Weasel for being her amazing, smart, sarcastic, funny, gorgeous, wonderful self. And winning a ton of prizes and trophies as a result of her hard work.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

A lot of people who should have known better. Naomi Wolf and Michael Moore, I'm looking at you.

14. Where did most of your money go?

The usual suspects -- rent, food, utilities.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Worldcon! I got to meet some awesome people, see and do some awesome things, hold a HUGO Award, make art with the Lioness, and I've never been hugged so much in my LIFE.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?

_Unknown Caller_ by U2

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?

Much happier.

b) thinner or fatter?

No idea.

c) richer or poorer?

Poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Sleeping.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Ignoring my gut instinct.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

The DH and Agent Weasel in the morning. Early afternoon/Christmas lunch/mid-afternoon with MIL and a friend of hers, then home to just the three of us again. Relaxed and low-key and happy.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?

The DH

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?

Every day. We had our 13th wedding anniversary in March.

23. How many one-night stands?

Zero.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

QI and Castle. I don't watch a lot of TV, though.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I don't really hate anyone, even the people who think I hate them. I don't think hate is worth the energy.

26. What was the best book you read?

_I Shall Wear Midnight_ by Sir Terry Pratchett

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I don't really think I had one this year.

28. What did you want and get?

Enough time and energy to do some of the things I'd been putting off doing.

29. What did you want and not get?

Oh, there are all sorts of things I want. Some of them are feasible, some are not. I have enough to be going on with.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Inception. Hands down.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I put on my best frock and went drinking with the DH and some mates. I turned 41.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Less whimsicality in the brain pan.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?

Jeans and a t-shirt.

34. What kept you sane?

The DH. The Weasel. Prozac. Socialising. Knitting.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Professor Brian Cox, rock-star physicist, uber-nerd at large, and all round good guy. Hot, too.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The usual bullshit with a side-order of blatant misogyny.

37. Who did you miss?

Everybody I didn't get to spend enough time with. Some of my former co-workers.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Half of Worldcon. It was good to see Danjite, Khaybee and the Lioness in person, though -- they're definitely the highlights for me. (I'm going to stop there before I attempt to list the half of Worldcon I met by name. Hi, guys -- you know who you are!)

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:

Life is what you do. It's not what happens to you.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

Restart and reboot yourself
You're free to go

(from U2's song _Unknown Caller_)
