Brian and Stewie.

I usually don't write reviews on shows or whatever, but this one particular Family Guy episode really caught my attention.

"Brian & Stewie" - Season 8, Episode 17

The format of the episode panned out differently than the usual Family Guy humor...no gag reels, no random flashbacks and no antics from the other characters. The plot has Stewie and Brian locked in a bank vault and the entire episode displays the course of their captivity together.

It's controversial and gained a series of mixed reviews, many criticizing the crude humor involving a diaper at the beginning of the episode (which I agree, was a bit too much)...

But what really engaged me was the seriousness and depth the tone suddenly evolved into through the dialogue shared between the two characters. After the humor calms down, Brian confides to Stewie about his thoughts of suicide, admitting that it is the reason why he keeps a gun in his bank vault. I was captured by how their conversation climaxed to this point, while touching on a very dark and serious topic.

It was nice to have an inside look into the relationship between these companions in an honest and raw perspective, while communicating a comforting and sentimental message. To live with purpose. What does that mean? Sometimes, by giving someone else's life "purpose" by simply being an important individual to them, a person which who they cannot do without, is enough to give your own life significant meaning and a fulfilling purpose.

Like Stewie says in the episode, "...it's about the greatest gift one friend can give another".

I know Seth MacFarlane has based Family Guy on controversy and pushing the show's censorship to it's limit...but what I appreciate about his work is that there is a sense of intellectuality and realism that he tends to show through the humor and characters of the show.
