I was in London during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It was awful. I feel the same sadness and horror today, following a similar tragedy unfold in a city I lived in for three years and eventually, learnt to love.
My place of work was just around the corner to London Bridge Station, on the Northern (and Jubilee) line. For those unfamiliar with the city’s Tube network, London Bridge is two stops away from Moorgate, a few stops from Liverpool Street and an easy connection to Kings Cross, all tube stops targeted by the terrorists. Any Londoners would tell you that it was always a question of when. It was at the back of my head all the time. Only a few months before I came back to Australia, Bank Station, the main station with connections to Moorgate, Liverpool and Kings Cross (and was one of my frequent stops) was closed for a couple of days as police did a test run. They did a mock terrorist bombing attack at the station to try and find out how long it would take to get everyone out, which exits would be used, measure the smoke levels, etc.
All the places they have shown on TV were all familiar to me. As part of my job, I would often catch the morning train to Moorgate, often grab my morning coffee from a cafe at Liverpool Street, catch the 8am or 9am train from Kings Cross to get out of London. :( I really feel for those who went to work yesterday not knowing that they were about to suffer from such a terrible event. :(((
I am glad all my friends are safe. But nothing said today can bring back the lives of those who died or heal those who are injured. I am very, very sad right now. The worst thing is that these must have been planned a few years ago and is probably the first of many. :(

Some secret terrorist network has claimed responsibility. For those who don’t know much about the Al Qaeda network, I recommend reading this book "The Base: In Search of Al Qaeda, the Terror Network That Shook the World" by investigative journalist Jane Corbin. The book details the story of the men behind 9/11, how they communicated, the London shoe bomber, Osama Bin Laden's upbringing etc. It’s an excellent read and borne out of five years of Corbin's research and investigation on the subject.
Much love,
