Smells like a horoscope

A new year is a few days away. Another year full of surprises, disappointments and joy. Joy mostly. Because the eyes see what the eyes want to see.

I’ve had to endure a lot this year. And learnt a lot. And like they say, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Next year, I want things to be different. We all say this and days later, we revert back to old habits. The beauty of it though is that once a year, we get a chance at a new beginning. You can do this any time of the year of course. But symbols are important and something about the first of the first makes January 1 the best time to start afresh.

The streets are empty. The church is full. It’s a lovely day.


Random thoughts

Blood flows from one man to another. Blood. The red liquid that sustains life. Blood flows from a woman every month. A refusal to give life. We refuse life many times in our lifetime before we decide to give chance to that which passes from one generation to the next.

A relationship between a grandfather and his grandson.

“You’re all I got grandpa.” he says.

The mother sweeps the house clean. Lifting each chair methodically, clockwise, to reach places that gather dust.

The brother cooks ginataang manok with malunggay (chicken in coconut cream with malunggay, a Filipino vegetable).

A dirty conversation snakes its way between two people wanting to be close and distant at the same time.

English breakfast tea and Walkers’ Pure Butter Shortbread Rounds. Life can be good.
