THERE IS A WEATHER STATION
here in town reporting 43°F outside. The lady on our
public radio station this morning said today would be “warm,
with highs around forty” and chilly as that sounds it really
does seem warm on this sunny afternoon.
This is the third day running we have gone above freezing. I don't
think that has happened since before Christmas, or maybe since the
weekend before that, when twenty-two inches of snow fell on us in less
than twenty-four hours. A lot of that still lingers today, despite the
heat wave.
The silence of the past couple of days, when the furnace shuts down
for want of more heating to do, has been almost unsettling. The whir
and rattle of the circulating pumps has been a constant backdrop of my
life for days on end. When it isn't there, my first reaction is
invariably one of vague unease, wondering whether something has gone
wrong down in the boiler room.
