So it turns out that the Bloggies are the blog equivalent of the Oscars. Here is who we are up against for Best Community Weblog: Metafilter, Fark, Monkeyfilter and one other that escapes me at the moment but is just as important as these.
We have --zero-- chance of winning.
I don't read blogs. I'm not web savvy; that's West Egg's job. But I've heard of Metafilter, and of Fark. I hadn't heard of Monkeyfilter; turns out that Metafilter is so popular that a group of its readers started Monkeyfilter as an adjunct.
So what does this have to do with Rubber Rodeo?
In 1984 RR were nominated for a Grammy for Best Video-Short Form. Their competition was David Bowie (who won), Ashford & Simpson, Phil Collins, Thomas Dolby, and Olivia Newton-John. Knowing that they had no shot, they went and had one of the best nights of their lives. The nametags Bob and Trish wore are still extant, surviving a fire. (Trish literally gasped when I told her this, something that doesn't usually happen for real.)
The parallels are pretty blatant, and pretty mindboggling. When I watched people on TV saying, "It's an honor being nominated!", I often thought they were, simply, liars. They're not. It is beyond an honor. As an anarchist I don't believe in voting; I mean in the political sense, but to change my statement now would seem hypocritical. Whether whoever reads this votes or not, we have zero chance of winning. If I could figure out how to tell everyone to vote (for anyone) without getting into a big political sidebar, I would do so.
I sometimes say that our site isn't a blog. Well, apparently I don't know what I'm talking about and the pros do, and they've just schooled me. So it is a blog. But it's something more; it's a love letter.
A love letter to New York.
