Sleeping.
Sarah sometimes goes into Chuck’s room to watch him sleep. Her excuse is that she is just being an overly cautious bodyguard whose overprotective to the point that she will only believe that he is safe is by being there actually seeing him in his bed. Which is partially true, but it’s really because she likes to watch him sleep.
It’s the only time he really seems at peace. No intersect. No spies. No danger. Just the life that he has always wanted. A house, a yard, white picket fence, loving wife, 2.5 kids, a dog, and a successful software company. And it’s only in his dreams that he will get this freedom. It’s rewarding to finally see that he has this. Unfortunately, he probably won’t remember most of it in the morning.
She stands there, watching him, arms folded so that she doesn’t succumb to the overwhelming desire to touch his face, run her hands through his hair, and other things that shouldn’t be caught on camera (but have caused her to wake up, many a night, soaked in a hot and cold sweat, panting, body tingling, heart pounding, and head swirling from the dream she just had).
She could stand there watching him all night if she had to. Especially if she was allowed. But tonight, as with every other night she does this, she stands stiffly gazing at him in sadness, and pity, and hope, and especially love despite the fact that its forbidden. But the most amazing part is that when she sees him at peace, she is at peace (despite the war between her heart telling her that she should be the one lying in his arms and her spy side telling her that she can’t be caught on camera. It’s both better and worse than what her spy side used to tell her: that she isn’t supposed to feel like this. But she doesn’t care anymore, she loves him, and that’s that. There is no turning back.).
This night, after her few minutes of peace were up, she started to leave when she heard a murmur. So she stopped and turned to listen. She heard it again, but clearer this time.
It sounded like “Sarah.”
She froze. He caught her. Crap.
Then he said/murmured something else as he was turning over, still dead asleep (phew), and snuggling into his new position.
It sounded like “I wuv you, Sarah. You’re perfect.”
She bolted out of there as fast as she could, scared that her face would be caught on camera. Which was a face of completely pure, unadulterated puppy love.
She ran straight to her car as fast as she could possibly could. Jumped in and drove away. Warm tears running down her face. Some from sadness that she isn’t allowed give him the love he deserves, and that she desperately wants to give him, but most from the fact that he said he loved her. That she’s perfect. That he says it in his sleep. That she is his in his dreams. That means that in his dreams where he has the peace and perfection he wants, she is the woman he has by his side to love and be with forever. All she could think to that was “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my GOD!”
That thought does not stop the whole night. And as she gets into bed, a new thought pops into her already excited brain: “What do I say when I’m asleep.”
