so anyway this got us onto the subject of how difficult it is to actually get a taxi for peter or stacey or any of our staff who use wheelchairs in the first place. not so many taxi companies have wheelchair accesible cars. we have to book in advance by a fair bit to get one. if not then we head out onto the road to get a big black one. the big black ones being the only ones with ramps. we can stand there for fourty minutes some days while taxis with ramps and no passengers in, their available light on simply drive past or just gawk at us. this led us to try an experiment of peter or stacey standing out of the way and someone without a disability flagging one down. the first one will stop straight away. this in itself is disgusting. but when we motion for them to let the ramp down so we can get the wheelchair in what do they say?
"ah this one doesnt have a ramp sorry"
"its just that the ramps broke"
"oh i dont want to go that far"
any number of excuses which basically amount to one of two things
1 they are simply to lazy to help someone in and out of their car
or
2 they do not want a disabled person in their taxi.
if you ring to complain its a case of if you didnt get the number then we cant help. if you do get the number, oh no thats not one of ours, we wont have people doing that, must have been a different company we dont have anyone of that number working for us here.
