Robert, ever tried meditation? Not everyone's cup of tea... but...

All of this reminds me of a couple of exercises I've given to some friends. Writers looking for ways of better doing description. How does it apply?

Well. Sit somewhere. Comfortable and relaxed. Then close your eyes. And listen. For most beginners it helps if you just do this as naturally as it comes, no goals of perfection or anything. Just listen. And start to list only what you hear.

Cars. A truck in the distant roar. Sounds of electricity. Music from the left side. Wind in the plants. Refridgerator. People in the hall. A child somewhere yelling, from the right.

Basically it seems simplistic. But if you spend time listening, paying attention and "looking" for all the input you're getting and often just ignore... focus on what's coming in... what it's coming into often stills to a point of relaxation and... stillness.

Most of what I notice in others is a sense that stillness or the point of awareness of self without the babble of a brain is some sort of hard to reach point. It's often not, for me. More often it's simply a matter of not negating self but not paying attention to it by way of giving it more to pay attention to.

(...) Ok, what I'm babbling about is : sometimes we think that to find stillness it's a matter of focusing on stilling ourselves. And in fact it can sometimes be more productive not to will that but to achieve it by making those things around us more important and noticing them, letting that quiet come from the simple act of not making ourselves the most important thing in any space we inhabit.

Blather done... mooooving on.
