I saw this on Martha Wells' lj, where her agent is doing a Hurricane Sandy charity auction for a critique on a partial manuscript, and it looked like something some of you might be interested in (though I'm guessing a good many of you are far too broke like me ;), so I'm passing it along.
There is much to be thankful for [...] I also want to take a moment to thank and appreciate all those who are out there getting more power, supplies, and help to those in need. There were certainly people who extended a helping hand to me, and they were a treat.
In support of those people, I’m going to auction a critique of a partial manuscript of a novel. A partial manuscript will consist of up to 50 pages in standard manuscript format (approximately 12,500 words). In order to maximize benefit for the bidder, I’m going to limit this to the kinds of projects I represent, which includes both adult and YA fiction (not MG). (See my guidelines for more information.) Two things I think might be worthwhile to note:
1. I've loved Martha Wells since the first book of hers I read (which was Wheel of the Infinite back in 2001), but while she's one of my favorite authors ever, she definitely went through a period there where she almost gave up writing due to lack of sales and such. But these past couple of years have seen that turn around for her, to where she's actually has multiple series and novels she's working on. Besides being a lesson in perseverance!, this might also show that this agent has some ability as well. Oh, and as a quick note, the guidelines the agent's talking about in that blurb I quoted are, roughly, that she represents only YA & adult fiction (though a great many genres of it), so if you have a history manuscript, you can just ignore this. ;)
2. As someone who did horribly on the auction stories I let people bid on (the first of which is likely to be out this week, and, look, only 10 months after it should have been!), I have to say that most people aren't as weird as I am, so I'm guessing this might be worth it for some of you... saying you have that kind of money at any rate (the bid was up to $500 when I looked, so it's not cheap!). *snork* It is a good cause, though, so, again, if you have it, there you go.
