TITLE: Getting Home
CHARACTERS: Ichirou (Ohno), Jirou (Sho), Saburou (Aiba), Shirou (Nino), Gorou (Jun)
RATING: G
LENGTH: 2256 words
DISCLAIMER: I own not Arashi and never will. Premise from "My Girl" PV.
SUMMARY: Each son of the Maiga family had their own personality, each very much shown in how they go home. (Sort of different shorts in one oneshot. :) +++ Omake.)

It was an unwritten rule in the Maiga household that upon leaving the office to go home, you must contact any, or as strongly recommended by Jirou: ALL, of your brothers. But, really, the actual rule meant contacting Jirou and updating him every five minutes of your location.

Jirou goes home immediately once the work clock strikes 8pm. (He needs not extend his overtime. That's how efficient he is a worker, some say.) No matter how much his female co-workers try to convince him to stay longer and have dinner with them afterwards, he quickly declines them, saying "Ah, no. I have to get home, maybe next time." A next time which never really comes.

Rumors have spread he has a very beautiful, capable live-in partner waiting at home who cooks the most amazing meals, but his close friends at work all know the truth--he just has a brother complex (--addiction, some may joke.).

"On my way home! Hope you will soon, too." He mails the other four, and that's the signal that the others should also make their way home.

Saburou never really had a problem with the rule. He was used to sending Jirou random messages since he ever learned how to mail anyone. Jirou didn't need the emoticon-filled mails every so often, though.

「I'm at 711

Want anything

--was understandable (and sweet, actually). But it could get as weird as

「JIROUCHAN

Look, penguin!

--or,

「Did you bring your umbrella

I didn't.

--or just,

Random as the mail were, it was still okay. (Or at least, Jirou convinced himself it was.) It was an assurance to him that Saburou was still doing fine somewhere.

Neither did Shirou have a problem with the rule. Usually, he would call Saburou to come pick him up.

"Shirou?"
"Sa-nii. I'm at the usual 711."
"Eeh? You can't be serious! I promised my officemates I'd finally go karao--"
"Am waiting here."
"… I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Thanks."

However, most of the time, a simple mail to Saburou (“711." "On my way.") would suffice.

So, by connection, Saburou updates Jirou of where the younger is, too.

「4 is with me

We're on the way home

--he’ll mail. What shocks Jirou at times is if a few minutes later, some mail comes saying

「The latest Zelda is out, did you know

It looks amazing

and then Jirou would quickly reply mustering as much speed over the keypads as he could, "DON'T YOU DARE BUY HIM ANY GAMES. GET OUT OF THAT GAME STORE NOW."

Ichirou had a huge gap in his personality, one that was very evident in upholding this household rule. When he has deadlines to attend to for work, he devoutly updates Jirou. "Overtime." "Must finish. Will come home late." or "Don't wait up. Leave curry, ok?" mails were very much appreciated by the younger brother. However, on nights after finishing such deadlines, Jirou would stay up, worried sick, wondering where the man was.

Jirou could recall countless times Ichirou went home drunk from clubbing--er, celebrating--after such deadlines. What worried Jirou wasn't just not knowing his brother’s whereabouts. It was more of how Ichirou would party too much, drinking so much to amounts he cannot take, and would even come home at a time the others are just about to go to work. He also could not fathom that no matter how wasted his brother gets, he still manages to get home in one piece.

Jirou woke up earlier than usual on the mornings after, even though he sleeps as latest as possible the nights before. He’d call his dear brother immediately.

"Nii-san, where are you?"
"Nnn? Hic. I'm on the way hic home."
"Really? Tell me where."--at this point Jirou's already at the door putting on his shoes--"I'll go pick you up right now!"
"Ah, no--hic--no need."
"Nii-san you're hiccuping pretty badly and I don't even know how you're getting home by yourself. Stay right wherever you are."
"But I'm already--"

--then Jirou dropped his phone because Ichirou just entered through the door, lying beside the shoe cabinet, snoring away.

Gorou was never a problem. He was Jirou's pride and joy, really. He's never had such an obedient brother. (Minus Gorou's adolescent times. Those were incredibly harsh on Jirou, but we'll save that talk for later.) Gorou knows just how to tell Jirou when he's going home, if he's going somewhere else, or if he's already at home. He's never caused his brother a sweat--except for this single instance.

Gorou was about to phone his worry wart brother that he'll be staying real late for a company party when he'd realized his phone's battery nearly dying out. As fast as he could, he typed up a message to Jirou, though the effort went to dust. The phone died on him just when he was about to click 'Send'. He decided to phone home on a company phone instead.

At 7:45pm, Jirou was getting anxious. His eyes kept lingering from the papers he checked to his phone. Usually, his phone would ring at this time, bringing him a message from Gorou such as "Nii-san. I'll be on my way home soon." but why is it that that day nothing had come? Getting more and more anxious, he quickly finished the few more papers he was assigned to check, rushing home like never had before.

"Welcome back, Jirou-chan!" Saburou greeted him from the living room, sitting next to Ichirou who watched Shirou playing on his 3DS. He was browsing through what seemed to be this cellphone pamphlet.

"Welcome back, Jirou-nii." The gamer welcomed him, though his eyes never left the console screen.

"I'm home." Jirou took off his shoes and proceeded to their direction. "Is Gorou back already?"

"Eh…" Saburou looking up from his pamphlet again, tilting his head a bit to the side. "No…"

"Something wrong, Jirou?" Ichirou asked, looking to him with brows furrowed.

"Gorou hasn't come home and hasn't contacted me…" This elicited a small gasp from everyone else in the room, even the busy Shirou. "Are you sure he hasn't come home yet today? Maybe he came home then went out?"

"I got here around 8:20pm along with Sa-nii." Shirou answered, shutting his 3DS close. "He usually comes home earlier than us, so I don't think he's come home yet."

"Why didn't you look for him, then?"

"We thought he'd contact you."

"Oh, no!" Saburou exclaimed, dropping his pamphlet to the floor as he stood up. "W-what if he's gotten lost somewhere?"

"What if he was mugged?” The horror was definitely evident on Jirou’s face after he gasped. “No money. No phone. Maybe even his sparkly jacket was taken from him!”

"Calm down." Ichirou spoke. A sudden calm filled the room. He'd always had this calming effect on his brothers. Even though to outsiders it may seem Jirou was more active and brother-like, Ichirou ultimately had his brothers great respect for him. "He's bound to get back soon."

Moments passed without them saying anything. Shirou couldn't find the will to continue playing his game. Saburou was starting to tear up from worry. Jirou was still trying to calm himself down full, breathing in and out heavily.

"10 o'clock." The three younger ones turned their heads to their dearest brother when they heard him speak. "If he's not back by 10 o'clock, we'll go find him."

The three nodded their heads in sound approval, each hoping deep inside their brother was safe.

At 10 o' clock.

"Should we call the police already?"

"No, Jirou. That's not necessary. Here, your jacket."

"JIROU-CHAN LET'S GO~"

"Hey, idiot. Properly put your jacket on. You'll get a cold."

"Y-y-y-you just called me an 'idiot'?!"

"Shirou."

"Okay, I'll stop, Ichi-nii."

"Nii-san… sniff sniff What if… What if---"

Ichirou patted Jirou on the back, an effort to comfort him. Jirou could tell the pat meant him saying 'He's okay, Jirou.'

"So, as discussed," Shirou started, finished putting on his scarf while the rest finished up, as well. "Sa-nii and I will go to the cafe and bookstore."

"Jirou and I will go to his work place."

"Oh, gods, please let him be okay."

"Everyone ready?" Ichirou asked.

"Yeah!"

"What are you guys doing?"

The four immediately stop their fussing when they heard the familiar, bossy voice from the door. There, he stood, looking incredibly tired but had one thick eyebrow raised high to his brothers in question.

What he didn't know, the four men in front of him almost exploded at the sudden relief of seeing him safe and sound.

"G… GOROOOUU-KUN!!!" Saburou immediately jumped towards his dear younger brother and wrapped him in a tight hug. "I WAS SO WORRIED."

"HUH?" Gorou exclaimed quite loud. "What would you worry about me for!?"

Shirou watched his twin getting slobbered in Saburou kisses while he stressed that he called home but no one answered--something about leaving a message on the answering machine that he'll be late due to some company party. No matter, the relief further settled in. Almost an hour of game time was spent waiting for this guy to arrive home safely, and every second spent waiting was worth it.

With a smirk on his face, he approached his two brothers, prying Saburou off Gorou to welcome him home himself. "Welcome back."

The older pair watched their brothers from inside, the other three heading out to the yard for a bit of fresh air and quick, fun bickering and do-S-ing over one another. Jirou was starting to tear up.

Ichirou let out a soft chuckle when he noticed. "You're that relieved?"

"I was really, really, really, really, really worried, you know." He wiped a tear while Ichirou gave out a chuckle a bit louder. Really, this brother of his could be so adorable when taking care of everyone else. He gave him another pat on the back for affirmation.

"Can never fully take your eyes off them, huh?"

"Uh-huh."

"Jirou-nii, Ichi-nii," Gorou called to them, walking back inside the house after a few moments. Saburou was still glued to his arm while Shirou kept poking his side and making him squirm. "I'm back."

"Welcome back." Jirou beamed, incredibly happy his brother had come home safely. Ichirou smiled warmly to Gorou, his own 'welcome back'.

"Okay!" Jirou suddenly exclaimed. "To celebrate, I'll make us some warm soup!"

"NO!" The four shout in unison.

"Jirou-nii. Seriously, just--just don't."

Omake.

Jirou checked the answering machine the following day, being the first to wake up. He remembered Gorou complaining no one seemed to try to even check it, so he figured he should.

You have eleven messages.

Jirou's eyes shot wide at the number, but continued anyway.

Message 1. 7:46PM.
"Jirou-nii. My phone ran out of batteries so I couldn't mail you. I forgot to mention I had this company party to go to. I'll be back late, okay? See you."

Beep.

Message 2. 7:46PM.
"Jirou-nii, you haven't called back. I was expecting you'd kinda try calling back on the company pho--oh, wait, you're not home yet. Um, okay. Anyways, I'm okay here. Totally okay. See you."

Beep.

Message 3. 7:48PM.
"Jirou-nii. I swear you shouldn't worry, okay? I'll be home probably past 12mn, btw. Don't wait up. See you."

Beep.

Message 4. 8:00PM.
"Okay, I'm getting kinda worried you'll freak out if I return too late. I'll be back by 11pm. See you."

Beep.

Message 5. 8:01PM.
"Scratch that. I'll be back by 10pm. See you then."

Beep.

Message 6. 8:04PM.
"I'm sorry I feel like I'm spamming our answering machine. But, uhm. God I feel like a gradeschooler. Well, Jirou-nii. Bye. See you later."

Beep.

Message 7. 8:05PM.
"My coworkers are telling me to pry off the phone now, so. See you."

Beep.

Message 8. 8:06PM.
"I just had to call again to tell that if you want to try and call the company phone, by the way, it's okay. I'll come back to the phone as much as I can. See you."

Beep.

Message 9. 8:10PM.
"Jirou-nii, I'm getting worried you might be worrying about me so--Maiga! Hurry up, it's your turn to sing! I'll be right there!! Uhm, I'll call again later for what I wanted to say. I'll be back by 10pm, okay? 10pm!"

Beep.

Message 10. 8:16PM.
"Jirou-nii. Just in case Shirou wants it for dinner, I'm willing to let him eat the pudding I left. See you at 10pm."

Beep.

Message 11. 8:19PM.
"Ichi-nii. Please make sure Jirou-nii isn't panicking. Sa-nii, please don't bully Shirou while eating the pudding. I miss you all. I wanna go home soon. See you at 10pm."

Beep.

Jirou stood still by the phone, staring at it even moments after it played the prerecorded clips.

He was so touched by his brother's words. He was really, incredibly happy.

Had his unwritten policy really formed his brother into a fine, young man who would even phone home constantly in worry? To others, Jirou's conclusion may be strange, but it was genuine to him. He knew deep inside he didn't really need to have his brothers update him wherever they were. But he wanted to instill in them the notion that they are never alone. They will always have someone waiting on them, and they should do their utter best to not make them worry. While at the same time, should it happen that the other person is stuck in a bind, they should be ready to respond no matter what situation.

With what has happened over the night before until this morning, Jirou was content.

Jirou was incredibly, overly happy.

AFTERNOTES: How was that? Honestly, I found the Gorou bit most troubling but most touching to write. I don't think this is the type of fic to make anyone cry, but at least I hope I made you go 'aww'. I still have a lot to develop in my writing skills. Guh. Writing non-smut is much of a challenge so I hope I can write more Maiga. ♥

Anyhow, I hope I was able to encapture the different personalities of the five members here. XD Were you able to relate to any of them? I'd love to hear. :)
Thanks very much for putting up with those 2,200++ words. Thank you very much for reading. ♥
