Chicago Con 2010-A SPN Con Newbie’s Experience

Oct 16, 2010 17:32

LiveJournal is either being a pain or I don't know what I'm doing (could be both).  I had this fixed up nice with pics but then it wouldn't post everything so for now I'll just post this.

I’m not sure what I expected since I had never been to a con before but for me, it was my dark side of the moon.  Hmm….that makes it sound bad but I think you SPN fans know what I mean……if you found me in heaven (or at least the SPN version of heaven), I’d be at the 2010 Chicago Con.

Thursday morning, I had the alarm set for 3:30 a.m. and when it went off I literally bounced out of bed and said “It’s time to go!”  I drove to Nashville to pick up my friend Anne-Marie, who had flown in from the UK.  It was the first time we had ever met.  We drove from Nashville to Chicago, stopping a few places along the way (including an awesome windmill farm in Indiana) and arriving at the hotel around six or so.  At the hotel we met up with our friend, Terri, whom we had also never met.  We all three belong to a private Facebook group of 12 women who met through their love of Supernatural.  The group is called Insane Old Ladies or IOL’s.

After meeting up with Terri, we were getting ready to go grab a bite to eat when Richard Speight Jr. and Jason Manns come strolling through the lobby to check in.  They stopped and talked to us for a minute but I honestly don’t remember what was said.  I was slowly turning into a zombie at this point because I was so tired.  I do remember I said hi to Richard and I remember he was nice.  I thought I was doing good just to remain on my feet!  LOL

After eating we came back to stand in line for tickets to Jensen’s photo ops and I had some other photo ops I wanted to buy.  Then it was time to get some rest for the first day of the con!

Friday morning I had to be downstairs early to help set up the table for the canned food drive I had volunteered to help with.  Dawn from SPN Fans United Against Hunger made all the arrangements.  All I had to do was show up!  I spent most of the day at the table, along with Jasmine who had volunteered to help throughout the weekend.  I met lots of people while working at the table but one of my favorite people I met was Melissa, who was working at the table next to me for The Chicago Cause.  Both of our tables ended up collecting lots of food and other items thanks to the awesomeness of the Supernatural fans.  Thank you guys soooo much!

Also, starting on Friday, I was carrying around a huge tote bag I made that had Supernatural Seriously Awesome on the side of it.  SSA is a Facebook fan page I help admin with three other girls.  I had made quite a few buttons with an SSA logo on it and was giving them away to the fans who would come up and give me their fave one liner from the show.  Needless to say I got called Assbutt a few times.  It was great fun and I was so glad to meet all of the fans.  I even got a gift from two fans from Mississippi:  Myra and Rhonda.

I’m not gonna do a rundown of each panel.  I’m sure you guys have seen all that on youtube by now.  I just want to record my personal experiences from the con.  Friday I had photo ops with Matt, Richard and Jason.  All three were extremely sweet and adorable and Jason is very tall!  When I met Richard I asked him what part of Nashville he was from because that is where I was born and raised.  We weren’t born in the same part but he knew where I was from and he asked me if I still lived there.  I just think it’s extremely cool we grew up close to each other.  When I had my photo ops with Jason I told him I was looking forward to his concert and he said he was too.  He has a very nice smile.

Jason’s concert was that evening and I really didn’t know but one of his songs since he is not the genre of music I normally listen to but he has an amazing voice and is a really talented musician.  I bought both of his CD’s and when I got his autograph I told him I really enjoyed his concert and he signed the pic, “Sonya, So glad you liked it!”  An added bonus during Jason’s concert was Richard singing and playing two songs.  I knew he could sing from watching karaoke videos but I had no idea he was such a talented guitar player!

About the only thing I was a little disappointed in for the whole weekend was karaoke night.  Not that it was bad as a whole….although some people really shouldn’t sing.  Sorry!  I love you all but really….some people should not sing.  I really had my heart set on doing some karaoke but we forgot to sign up during the early sign up session so it was after one o’clock in the morning and our name was not really any closer to being called than it was at eleven so we gave it up.  By then people were just roaming up out of the audience so we figured we’d never get to sing unless we just bullied our way up there and I really didn’t want to do that.  A couple of high points from karaoke night:  I enjoyed the crowd singing Carry on my Wayward Son and Jennifer from SSA totally rocked the house singing with Richard and Matt.  She was another total sweetie I was so glad to meet at the con.

Day two was pretty insane.  Fred Lehne’s panel was at ten a.m. and after it was over I was supposed to get my photo made with him.  When I started looking for my photo ops tickets I couldn’t find them anywhere!  I emptied my bag out and looked through everything and Terri went right behind me looking through everything again.  I just had the tickets that morning!  I think when I was sorting out which ones I needed Saturday and which ones I needed Sunday, somehow Saturday’s didn’t make their way back into my bag.  I went to the registration table and asked if any tickets had been turned in (which of course, I doubted) and they said no, I would have to buy them again.  Well, I kinda fell apart at that point.  I went outside and cried like a big baby.  Granted, it wasn’t the really important photo ops but they were important to me or I wouldn’t have bought them in the first place.  It was like flushing $200 down the toilet and of course, I was mad at myself for being an idiot and losing them in the first place.  After I calmed down a bit, I went and found Gary (from Creation) and asked him if anyone had turned some tickets in.  He was always up front and since my seat was close to the front (and I think that’s where I lost them) I thought maybe someone had given them to him.  He said he didn’t know if any had been turned in but we could check at registration and I told him they already said I’d have to buy the tickets again and he said that I wouldn’t.  He asked me which ones I lost.  I told him I had my credit card receipt if he wanted to see it and he said no, he believed me because if I hadn’t lost them I was a really good actress.  I wasn’t crying at this point but I was still very visibly upset.  So, he replaced my tickets and all was right with the world again and Gary is officially my hero.  I told him this was my first con and he said he certainly didn’t want it ruined for me.

I missed my photo op with Fred because of all this madness but they had a make-up session later when they were doing group photos so I actually got my autograph with Fred before I got my photo.  I was the last one in his line and he was really chatty with everyone.  I asked him if it was really him on Facebook and he said yes.  I told him that I help run the fan page Supernatural Seriously Awesome that he posts on every once in awhile.  He said he liked to have fun with that and I told him that the fans really appreciate him doing that and so did the admin.  I gave him one of the buttons with our fan page name on it and he put it on!

Had my photo op with Clif a little later in the evening and gave him a button also.  He was wearing it while he was doing autographs and when he signed my pic he wrote “Love your page.”

The dessert party was that night and Aldis, Mark, Travis, AJ, and Matt were all there.  They took turns going to each table.  Mark was the last one to sit at our table and he was there the longest.  He’s a really charming man and he had some cool looking tattoos peeking out from beneath his t-shirt.  He kept saying in his panel something about getting killed this weekend so I told him I was worried about Crowley since he kept saying that and he just shrugged and gave this grin like “I can’t tell you.”  Then he said to let him know what we thought and to let the writer’s know.  So, after that I was really worried because I love Crowley but since the episode is over I can breathe a sigh of relief and say that Mark Sheppard is a tease. J

When Matt sat at our table he thanked us all for being there and for allowing him to do what he does and he seemed really sincere.  He seems to enjoy the fans so much.  I thanked him for retweeting info about the canned food drive and he said he always tries to help out the fans if he can.  He’s such a sweetie and he gave hugs to everyone in the room.  Very nice hugs, too.

Aldis was a sweetie when I had my photo op with him and gave me a huge hug.  AJ and Travis were joking around every time I saw them.  They are a great team.  I told them I hoped they got a TV spin-off (and yes, I see some of you cringing but I LOVE them).  They said they were hoping for the same thing.

Sunday morning I started getting nervous at the thought of meeting Jensen, Jared and Misha.  The breakfast was pretty fun and I had my own little Con moment when a girl at my table (named Amanda) recognized my pen name from fanfics.  I was carrying the bag that had the SSA fan page logo on it so those people could find me but I also put my fanfic pen name on there, along with an IOL logo.  Amanda saw my name and she asked if that was me from FF.net and I said yes and she said she reads my stories and they are really good.  I have to say that felt nice.  She was a very talented artist who showed me some of her drawings and I got her pen name from FF.net so I could look her up.

Photo ops with Jared were first and wow, he really is that tall!  I felt so short next to these guys.  I had debated so long on what to wear in my photo ops and after talking to a friend of mine from another discussion group I belong to, I decided to make a shirt that said Bi-Winchester and Proud.  (Thanks for the tip, Tree!  I also got to meet Tree and Stephanie at the con.  Great gals to hang out with and have some laughs.  I was glad to finally meet them)

So when it was my turn for my pic with Jared, he read my shirt and laughed.  I said “Well, I love you both.”  He said, “Aw, thanks.” Then he hugged me for my photo op and I thanked him.  As I walked off he was saying “Bi-Winchester and Proud” to the people standing around and he had them all reading my shirt!  He kept laughing so I wondered if it was the first time he’d actually heard the term Bi-Winchester.

Right after that I had to get back in line for photo ops with Jared and Jensen.  I’m not gonna lie to you.  I was a nervous wreck about meeting Jensen.  When I looked around the corner of that room and saw him standing there, looking all gorgeous in that black shirt, well, I thought I might lose it but fortunately I managed to hold it together at least long enough for a photo.  I think I look awful in the pic with them but they look great!  After the pic, I told them that I started watching their show when I was recovering from a painful divorce and that it has really helped me so much.  I was talking to both of them but I guess I was focused on Jensen more so I think Jared wasn’t sure if he should be listening or not so I kinda motioned for him to listen too.  I didn’t have time to tell them everything I would love to tell them about what this show has done for me and it would probably bore them to tears anyway but I just wanted them to know how much of a positive impact this show has had on my life.  Jensen thanked me for telling him and he said they loved hearing things like that.  I’m pretty sure Jared thanked me also but like I said, I was kinda focused on Jensen.  Sorry Jared.  And I admit I was just a little emotional after this photo op.

Then I went through the line one more time for my photo op with Jensen and even though I don’t ever like to have my picture taken, I do love my pic with him.  When I came up next to him and he put his arm around me he said “Coming down” and kinda hunkered down so he wouldn’t tower over me so much.  This time I told Jensen I wanted him to tell Danneel not all SPN fans hate her.  He said he appreciated that so much and he said she really worries about that.  He said “You wouldn’t believe the things out there on the internet.”  I said, “Oh yes, I would, but I wanted her to know we’re not all like that.”  He said he would be sure to tell her and he thanked me and patted me on the back as the people who work there were pulling me away.  LOL  Jensen would have talked longer, I believe.  I believe most of them would have talked longer if they had been given the time.

After the awesome panel with Jared, Misha and Jensen it was autograph time.  I didn’t say anything but thank you to Jensen this time and he thanked me and he looked directly at me as he said it.  I’ve heard stories about how he doesn’t look up when he’s signing but he did.  When I went through Jared’s line I said “Can I ask you a question?”  He said, “Sure.”  I said “What color are your eyes?”  (Yes, I hear you Safe Haven girls laughing) He opened his eyes wide and pulled his hair back and said “I don’t know.  What color are they?”  So I leaned down and looked at them and I said “They’re exactly the color I thought they were.”  He said, “And what color is that?”  I said “Greyish/green with golden brown flecks in the middle.”  He jokingly said “I never see them so I don’t know what color they are.”  I can now firmly stand by my description of Sam’s eyes in all of my fics because even though I could see what color they were they were still dark!

Next I went through Misha’s autograph line and I had made something for his baby so I asked if I could give him a gift.  The lady was like “Sure, give it to this guy.”  So I handed it to some guy who kinda tossed it on a small pile of stuff.  I wanted to make sure Misha knew I’d given it to him so as I got my autograph I told him I brought him something for the baby and he turned around to see what it was!  He thanked me and I told him his baby was beautiful and he thanked me again.  His smile reaches all the way into those piercing blue eyes.

After autographs were over it was time for pics with Misha and Jared and then just Misha.  Honestly, by this time I was dog tired.  I took the sandwich pic but didn’t say anything to them but thank you.  When I took my pic with Misha, he was reading my Bi-Winchester shirt and I said “Don’t hold that against me.  I have my Castiel button.”  It said Castiel is my hero.  And then I said something that sounds incredibly stupid but I thought it made sense at the time.  I told him I didn’t have to be Bi-angel because all the other angels were dicks.  He looked at me with this serious face and said “I know.” And it was totally his Cas voice.  J

So, after that the main excitement of the con was over but this was an experience I wouldn’t trade for the world.  I had the time of my life and met so many great people that I hope to keep in touch with and see at future cons….Nashville anyone???   And I have to say, my Bi-Winchester status is still intact.  I love Sam and Dean equally but after the con, there is no doubt I am a Jensen girl.  Jared was great but there was just something about Jensen and his sincerity and the way he listened to everything I had to say like it actually mattered.  The man is awesome!

On a side note:  The day after the con we were strolling through Chicago and ran into Jared and Gen.  I asked Gen if she had anything coming up soon and she said just supporting her husband.  I was like “Aw, that’s sweet.”  Jared said something about it was hard with her being in Los Angeles and him in Vancouver and she didn’t like to be away so I took that as meaning she’s not really looking for anything right now.  I told her that I was upset when they cancelled Flashforward (that was a great show) and she said “Oh, I know!”  I don’t remember the exact words she used but it was something about she thought Flashforward was just a little bit ahead of its time.  I told her I thought it was a great show and she thanked me.  Then she asked me where I was from and I told her Tennessee and she said she loved my accent.  My friends asked for a picture but Jared politely declined and I don’t blame him.  He just spent all day the day before having his picture taken although if they hadn’t already asked I would have asked for a pic with Gen because I had really been hoping to meet her.  I’d even brought something for her to autograph but of course I didn’t have it with me then!  When we parted Jared thanked us for coming out and Gen said “It was really nice to meet you.”  They were both dressed in black and Gen is extremely beautiful and sweet.

This has nothing to do with the con itself but I spent the following week in Chicago, met two more of my wonderful IOL’s and had the time of my life!  All of this thanks to a little show called Supernatural.
