There's Something About Fandom

Fandom. You know, like a Kingdom, but for fans. If the King's property were intellectual property only?

I discovered Fandom oh, long ago. The idea that you don't need to join a club to be part of something much bigger than yourself, and the only thing that ties you there is yourself, was strangely irresistable to me. A net to catch the wind, they call it.

When you live a nation, you can be unpatriotic and yet still live there. An American can loudly protest the government, and no matter how oppressive the regime, secret thoughts of dislike can still fester in the heart of any so-called patriot. But having citizenship in a Fandom isn't quite the same. You're not a patriot because you have such a great Fandom. You have the fandom because you're patriotic about it. Your Fandom is better, because it's better for you.

...Makes me think about Twilight, and how so many people have discovered Fandom through it. People who never had a Fandom before, who barely read books, but are now all geeked out over this Mary-Sue gone wild. For that reason, and that reason alone, I file Twilight under a good thing.

Because once you've had a Fandom, you can understand why other people have it, too.

fandom, twilight
