As far as Supernatural is concerned, I’m primarily a gen girl. I’ll read most slash pairings (except Sam/Castiel, a pairing I’m inexplicably, violently opposed to), but I tend to find gen fic more interesting and fulfilling. That said, I do have a soft spot for Dean/Castiel, though that has more to do with my investment in Dean and his happiness, than anything else. I favor stories where Sam plays an active role in the plot or is still Dean’s primary focus, mainly because I find these stories have the best characterization. Overall, I just find this pairing oddly sweet.
I have read a few Sam/Dean stories, though I’m not overly fond of the pairing. The only time I find them remotely plausible is in the most extreme situations, and even then, the characterization can be a major stretch, for me.
Here's my list of bookmarked fics. As always, beware spoilers in my super short summaries.
Dean/Castiel
Second Verse, Same as the First by
oatmeal_queen Groundhog Day-type shenanigans, c/o the trickster. Dean and Castiel have to work together to survive. Everything ends in sex.
My Eyes Are An Ocean by
libraryofsol The apocalypse is over, Dean is blind, Castiel is feeling guilty, and Sam and Bobby deal with the fallout. Lovely resolution, and bonus sequel,
An Eye For An Eye.
Good Things Do Happen by
trinityofone Post-apocalypse, God gives the boys a freebie for helping to save the world. Dean thinks of everyone, Sam just thinks about Dean. Very sweet all around, with gallons of beloved (read: dead) characters.
Doghouse Roses by
janie_tangerine Dean buys Castiel a collection of little fake roses. Absolutely adorable.
The First Year by
cloudyjennPost-apocalypse, Castiel goes back to heaven (temporarily) and Dean hones his nesting instincts.
Dean and Cas vs Elm Street by deancaschat
Dean and Castiel move to Elm Street. Different neighbors POVs, different authors. Adorable.
Lost my way (but haven’t forgotten my way home) by
moodymuse19 Castiel is turned human, and lives out his life with Dean. This story is so incredibly bittersweet. Dean/Castiel are awesome, but Dean and Sam’s devotion to one another is just as good. I cried.
Chuck Verse by
maskedfangirl Starting with
The Apocrypha of Chuck (which can be read as a stand alone), this is a Chuck-centric trilogy of fics (see title, try to contain your surprise), with a light sprinkling of slash, and an awesome Chuck/Castiel friendship.
Melting Verse by
strangeandcharm Dean and Castiel fall in love. One of my first Dean/Castiel fics, it took me by surprise, but turned out quite lovely. Includes several stories, but is complete, so be sure to read all the way through.
Absolution by
holy_hands Against his better judgement, Castiel offers Dean a way to save Sam. Fourteen chapters, interesting character development (awesome Sam POV), and good use of Pamela.
Peanut Butter-Pumpkin Wedding Cake by
sparseparsley AU Dean falls for Castiel, while convinced he's engaged to Anna. Great for light angst and misunderstandings.
Asunder by rageprufrock
AU Sam's an recovering addict who is marrying another recovering addict (Ruby), Dean drags pre-slash work buddy Castiel to the wedding. Heartbreaking, but with a hopeful ending. Good characterization, with a Ruby who doesn't make me want to scratch my eyes out.
Sam/Dean
Last Outpost Of All That Is by gekizetsu
Sam and Dean are the last living people on earth. Kind of creepy, then kind of educational (especially if you're a planner with a post-apocalypse plan). Wincest that makes some sense.
Fill A Space In Which Two Bodies Float by
neros_violin Sam and Dean save the world with sex. Silly premise, great execution. Very slow build to Wincest.
