puppy shopping

The next morning, once they were both up and having something resembling breakfast, Mia reached over to the counter and pulled a sheet to the table.

"So I made a list of a few breed rescues we can visit as well as a couple of shelters in the area," she said, showing the list to Tom. "Well, assuming you still want to come with."

"Of course I want to come along, you know how much I love dogs." Tom grinned. "So any particular breed you're thinking about more than others?"

"I don't know," Mia said. "Maybe a herding breed. But really it's gonna be more about the dog and how we relate I think."

"As long as it isn't one of those annoying little lapdogs that are only good for twitching and peeing." Tom laughed.

Mia looked shocked. "Do I really look like a little lap dog kind of person?" she asked.

"Nope, you look like the kind whose attracted to big dumb animals, both in dogs and best friends." Tom laughed.

"You are not dumb," Mia said, punching Tom's arm playfully. She thought. "It does need to have a modicum of control. Or at least be trainable. Nothing like that Marley from the book."

ooc ~ Sorry I didn't get to this last night. Daddy had to put our dog down yesterday and I just couldn't deal with replying.

"That rules out Lab puppies then." Tom chuckled.

ooc- Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. {{{{{hug}}}}}

"My thoughts exactly," Mia said. "Maybe some kind of a shepherd mix...if they have any of those. And I'm not opposed to a slightly older dog either."

ooc ~ Thanks. :( *hugs* And I'm on jury duty today. UGH!

"I always feel sorry for the older dogs, because everyone seems to want a cute puppy." Tom said, sipping his coffee. "You know a shepherd would be a great dog, we had one when I was a kid, named Boscoe."

Mia nodded. "I figure just see what they have," she said. "Not necessarily a puppy, but I also don't want to get one that there's a high likelihood they'll die in the next few years either, you know?"

"But you also don't want one that will have to be trained from scratch either. One maybe two to four years old?" Tom suggested.

"Right," Mia said. "So...when we're finished here, we can head out, if that's ok."

"I'm ready when you are, sweetheart." Tom smiled. "Just remember to not let me bring home a puppy of my own."

Mia nodded and grabbed her bag once they were finished. They took the T to one of the shelters on her list.

She filled out their initial paperwork and handed it to the worker behind the counter. The woman looked everything and nodded. "Everything looks fine," she said, then thought for moment. "You know, I know we have a lot of dogs here and they're all great. But we have one who just got cleared for adoption. Only about a year old. Her family had to give her up because of the economy. I just think you might be a good fit for Shayla. She just went into the yard to play."

Mia and Tom followed her down a hall and into a play yard where they were greeted by an adorable soft-coated Wheaten.

Tom laughed and knelt down to pet the dog. "You have just been claimed, sweetheart."

Mia laughed. "Me or Shayla?" she asked.
