The Runaway

I don't know his name.
I don't know his face.
The face that he had before.
Twenty years old.
A hundred miles an hour.
On tires with no tread.
Until he spun
         out of control
Until the rear of his car
        met a tree
Ejected the boy
       thirty feet across traffic.
To lie face down in wet grass;
half of that face sheared away
               by broken glass.
The runaway.
Blind chance brought his alcoholic father
      to drive past the scene
      to recognize his son's car
to rage at the young girl first responder.
"If you let him die, I'll kill you!"
Thirty days in ICU
to live or to die.
The runaway.

icu, accident, runaway
