this evening Bethany happened to find a newly unearthed cicada crawling around our lawn. it was meant to happen, clearly, because she was following a baby bird that ran under the yew bush, and then her eye fell upon it. tonight was thus gripped with cicada intrigue.

cicada pics! as taken by Bethany's fabulous Nikon )

oh man. I liked you before, but coming home from a long weekend to see this in my friends list bumped you up to god-like. Glee!

Yay for pretty buggy wings!

Um... Normally though, I think when something's hanging by one leg, that means it's either dying or dead. Nuuu... ,_,

boy, I really hope you're wrong. D: we both worried momentarily it could be dead, but then, dangling like a leaf is pretty good camouflage. plus it really did seem to have a good grip with that one leg.

there was no sign of it this morning, in the grass or in the tree. :I

as luck would have it, when Bethany came home, she found it in the lawn! since its emergence last night it's darkened considerably, and the veins in the wings are dark green. in fact the whole insect is quite dark-metallic-greenish. anyway, she took a couple pics and then it flew away.

phew. :D
