CHESSSSS

Apr 06, 2005 15:00

I spent two hours today sitting in the crack addict section of Washington Square Park where the chess tables are. I ate lunch while talking to this guy who was waiting for someone to play chess with him. When I asked him if he'd play beginners like me he said, "Sure. But for three bucks a game. Five, for two."

WHAT?
I persuaded him to let me play him once for free, but I told him that first, I need to practice online and look up some tactics. (hahah, I'm such a loser) He said the largest amount of money he's made in one day from chess is $630. There was a cute little old man sitting next to him waiting for someone to play too; apparently he used to be the President of the International Russian Chess Club. I've heard a lot of stories here about brilliant homeless people in NYC and I always get kind of excited that one of them may take me on as their apprentice, HAHAHA.

Then this old guy who used to be an art teacher started talking to me too (chess business was slow today) and gave me suggestions of artists to look up. I asked him to explain the genius of Andy Warhol and abstract art or minimalist(?) art

It's so much easier to talk to adults. I think I'm going to start hanging out in the crack addict section more now. Hoho.
