Fulfilling the requests from
smartycat (lederhosen) and
wordynessie (staircase), as well as a prompt from
31_days for today's date ("God made the distance between me and you")... it was supposed to be Tamaki/Haruhi, but it came out as more of a "how am i even friends with this person?" fic...
Enjoy!
Distance
“I think it’s better if you know your school’s superintendent’s name at least…if you think about it, it’s like you can come to this school because of Tamaki’s family’s financial support…”*
Just when she thought the gap may have been bridged just a little, when she thought she’d finally gotten to the point where she could actually sympathize with Tamaki Suou, something like this had to be revealed to her. Obviously, there was a class difference; his reactions to her “commoner” ways and her own reactions to his extravagance were evidence to that effect. Still, sometimes she felt that it was easier for him to forget it than it was for her. To her, it seemed like she was perpetually standing at the foot of a giant staircase (complete with red carpet and carved golden railings of course) staring up at him, while he called out to her from the top of the stairs. And though his voice traveled down to her ears comfortably, nothing she ever said seemed to reach him in the same way. And there was no way she’d ever be able to scale those steps in her lifetime. He might as well be as high as the Alps themselves (oddly, she could picture him in lederhosen).
She just couldn’t understand how he could be so open to her, profess such affection and not notice the distance, the height between them. His upbringing certainly lent itself to a self-centered attitude towards life, but sometimes… sometimes when he looked at her with that open _expression, she could feel him leaning towards her, and she worried. She worried that he might tumble down that giant staircase (or mountain) just to be close to her.
And she knew he wouldn’t regret the fall.
