Some callers can just pull at my heartstrings.
This man called from a very remote city. Like farmer remote.
He wanted the email to one of our investigators. Who, unfortunately, doesn't have an easy to pronounce name last name.
So I repeated the spelling of the name over and over and over yet again. I could hear his voice shake a little, I'm guessing from either embarrassment or frustration.
Me: Okay, let's just start over again.
Him: Okay, sorry about that.
Me: Don't worry, it's fine. So K AS IN KANGAROO.
Him: C????
Me: No, K AS IN K A N G A R O O.
On and on it went.
I hate the sound of my own voice in these conversations. Speaking LOUDLY and CLEARLY while trying not to sound CONDESCENDING is tricky.
He eventually got it. And apologized again for all the trouble.
Not sure why it makes me feel so bad.
I guess I think about people who are not patient (at all) with the elderly and treat them like they are, in fact, idiots and it makes me feel protective of them.
Everyone gets old. I mean, if you are lucky, you do.
Is it really that hard to extend a little grace to what you might become in the future.
Why don't people see that.
