Indeed, Jack McConnell is already getting itchy at the prospect, warning Cameron and co. about messing too much in the future.
Sheesh - Labour - shower of eejits. No matter what way I look at this, the Union surely can't last for long? Surely?
On another note - and a curious one at that - a great many English people feel completely disenfranchised from the Union also - that much is obvious, and frankly I can see their point (What a gaff for this would be Scots PM to call, British day????...).
English nationalism is consequently on the rise - whilst this will certainly act as a catalyst, it'd be nice for Scotland to vote herself free before it's entirely obvious how unworkable the current situation is.
I 'spose it still realises the ultimate dream - but imagine, looking back at the history books to read about when 'England had had enough - the break up of Great Britain'. Somewhat ironic.
Curious - and dangerous too - English nationalism is a different kind of beast - with a lot of fascist elements. That's a truth.
I hope when it does happen, that the people of England have representation and the kind of democratic country they think bests suits their own requirements - and don't fall prey of any dark elements.
I just came accross your LJ as your latest post contaned some Welsh, but your observation on Brown's foolish idea/plan is spot on. I do however think you're being a tad unfair re. English nationalism. Many in Wales (Labour mainly) like to cast Welsh nationalists as fascist and racists which is completely out of order. I read the 'Campaign for an Engllish Parliment' blog, and it's a good read. There are one or two tired anti-Welsh and anti-Scottish comments, but it's mainly due to frustration rather than anyhting more sinister (I hope), otherwise there's some real strong arguments for 'symetrical' [sp?] devolution.
Agree totally with your observation on Welsh nationalism, and I have absolutely no problem at all with English peeps embracing their own country either [it seems almost a sin for them to do so!] but I do think there is a genuine fascist element to English nationalism...
...that is quite unique, and very different to anything you might see in Scotland or Wales. England, quite simply, is a much bigger nation - with a tangible BNP vote at that.
Also, I disagree with your point on the newsblog at the CEP site. I'm afraid [as has been seen via the press and mass communications at large] the main point - the inadequate/unfair representation of English matters - Scots MPs voting etc - is lost.
I *totally agree* with the root problem. England should have its own parliament. Scots *should not* be able to vote on English matters. Definately and without a shadow of a doubt. I feel the English people are beginning to experience the inadequacies of an undemocratic union - as the people of Scotland did for so, so long. It's unfair. It doesn't work...
...but the blog is full of eejits. In fact, I was stunned [after linking in from the BBC] to see how many small minded, hateful, thoroughly incorrect individuals there were.
Their just cause is duly mocked before it begins, because of idiots - and it shouldn't be. I've lost count of *supportive* mails from Welsh people and Scots, that've ultimately been torn to shreds in a dire and backward manner.
Don't visit it anymore, I'm afraid...
...but I genuinely wish them all the luck in the world.
