I'm a first year teacher in Toronto who's thinking (already) about transferring come June. I want to be in a more supportive and collaborative department, and in a school with a more stable student population. I'm told that the demographics of my school are changing, the kids are getting tougher, and the population is becoming more transient. Kids are enrolling after being demitted elsewhere, and I understand that more of them have issues with the law, family, gangs and drugs.
I just can't see myself lasting in this profession if I don't have more mentorship, guidence and support during my first few years of teaching.
To all the seasoned teachers out there: how do you know if a transfer is called for?
