As long as Yamapi can remembers, he has always had this quirk: a tendency, or a preference - as Kame likes to call it - to pay attention to insignificant and irrelevant little things that don’t matter at all, when he actually has more important matters to attend to. According to Kame, he does it because he’s an irresponsible person who leaves important issues to be dealt by somebody else so he wouldn’t need to deal with the consequences.

“It’s called running away.” Kame says. “I hope there’s another term for it, I really do, but unfortunately, it’s the only term that comes to mind when I think about it. I mean, you purposefully avoid facing things that make your head hurt, always looking for the easy way out and choosing to do something that wouldn’t require you to risk anything at all - “

…In short, he’s a coward.

“Please, stop talking. It makes my head hurts.” As soon as that sentence leaves his mouth, the corner of his right eye twitches at his own choice of words - and even more at the triumphant smirk slowly blossoming on Kame’s face.

“See? That’s exactly my point.”

“Or perhaps I was just being considerate by trying to get you spend your much-deserved day-off somewhere else that isn’t your workplace.”

Kame raises an eyebrow at that. “Well, technically, this is your workplace, your practice room, while mine is in another level entirely, so -“

“That’s not the point and you know it. So, shoo! And get your pretty, overworking ass out of here as soon and preferably as far as possible from your - or my - workplace, or anywhere near this building.”

Uh oh. Kame suddenly has that mischievous little smile plastered on his face, and Yamapi immediately dreads what would come out of his mouth next. “You know, if that ‘ass’ remark actually refers to our night together yesterday -“

“Oh God, your brain is clearly in need of a rest! Off you go, now!” he half-shouts in an attempt to scream while at the same time also trying not to, already looking rather horrified, feeling the tips of his ears heat up at the comment.

“ - And if you’re trying to compensate because you were rather rough with me the other night, then you are -“

“Kamenashi Kazuya!” he (finally) shouts out, effectively cutting out whatever embarrassing remark that might come out of the other’s pretty little mouth, although unfortunately that action also instantly makes them the center of attention of the room’s other occupants: Namely, the rest of NEWS’ member.

“Oops.” Says Kame.

The tips of his ears definitely can’t get any redder as he turns to face his teammates. “Go back to practice, people. Or whatever it is you were doing before you got distracted.” And that command might have a better effect if only he also doesn’t feel his cheeks heat up as he hopes no one were actually listening to his and Kame’s conversation just now. “And Kei-chan, can you please stop giggling?” he adds. “And that means you too, Shige.”

“I wasn’t giggling!” Koyama and Shige squeak at the same time. Then they conspicuously get a coughing fit almost at the same time too, which only confirms Yamapi’s accusation.

Yamapi gives them both a look. “Yeah right. You two were just coincidentally having cough at the same time. Now go back to your practice.”

“Oh my… You look flushed. Are you feeling unwell?” Kame asks innocently (yeah, right), an amused little smile playing at the corner of his lips, a hand reaches out towards him to feel his cheek.

Yamapi bats his hand away. “No I’m not. And I would really appreciate it if you could please stop distracting me and my group’s practice.”

“…are you sure I’m only a distraction?” Kame asks in a low voice, looking up at Yamapi through a lowered set of his long eyelashes - which is completely unfair in Yamapi’s opinion, because Kame knows well he can never refuse him when he looks at him like that, and still it doesn’t stop him from taking advantage of it.

Koyama and Shige - who have been watching the entire time - put their hands over their mouth and start coughing conspicuously, again.

Yamapi glares at them until they turn away while clutching their sides (from holding back their snickering too long, most likely. Bastards!) and turns to focus his glare to Kame’s direction next…

…only to find out that the spot is now Kame-less.

“…”

Yamapi stares at the empty air where Kame has just been a second ago. Damn kid can be really fast sometimes. He sighs.

“…So you like it rough, eh?” A voice suddenly perks up, and when Yamapi turns his head he sees Ryo leaning against the wall just outside the practice room, grinning like a maniac. “Frankly, I’m speechless.” And if it’s actually possible, his grin gets even wider.

Yamapi growls. “You’re late. And if you don’t wipe that grin off your face in the next second, I swear I’ll show you speechless.”

“Somebody’s embarrassed~” Ryo sings, voice loud enough to be heard by everyone in the corridor as he steps into the room. Then in a much lowered volume he says, “Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” And the git even actually has a nerve to wink suggestively at him!

Glaring at the back of Ryo’s head, Yamapi humors himself by silently listing many painful ways to kill off some person without leaving any evidence behind and imagining said some person to be Ryo. Ah well. He smiles. It definitely brightens his mood.

He is about to go back to the practice room when the soft ding! of the elevator distracts him, and he looks at the number displayed on the LCD on top of it.

First floor. It must have been Kame.

He sighs. Really, just because he likes to put any issue he might have to be dealt later, doesn’t mean he’s actually an irresponsible person. After all, he always does all of his job and work dutifully without any complaint (well, most of the time anyway, but this is so not the point). And in his opinion, whether something is irrelevant or not, it depends on the viewer’s point of view. Something that’s important to him might just be something completely useless and insignificant to Kame, and vice versa.

At least that’s what he tells himself to believe.

But in the end…

You’ve got two messages:

‘…Yamapi, it’s me, Kame. I was wondering if you’d like to dine with me tonight. Call me?’

‘Hey Pi-chan! It’s Papa! Why aren’t you picking up your phone? Me and Kanjani kids and the rest of your group are having a get-together right now! Why don’t you join us? I promise you it’ll be fun!’

He stares at his answering machine blankly, replaying the messages over and over till he actually can’t think about anything but those two messages. I was wondering if you’d like to dine with me tonight. Yet all Yamapi can hear from that simple message is: We need to talk.

Slowly - almost hesitantly - he draws his phone close to his ear, fingers fumbling to push the familiar numbers on the phone. …yet still he hesitates and falters when he hears Kame’s voice on the other line - even if it was only his recorded voice, asking him to leave a message because he couldn’t pick up his phone at the moment.

Yamapi closes his eyes.

In the end…

“…Kame? It’s Pi. I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can meet you tonight. I’m having an important meeting with Tackey right now. I’ll try to make it up to you later. See you.” Clicks.

…he really is a coward.

He always hates it when Kame’s right.

A/N: if you feel this fic is rather bizarre somehow, you’re not alone! xP
I was writing an entirely different fic when I got sidetracked and wrote this instead. This is supposed to be a part of said different fic, but the atmosphere seemed a little bit too cheerful for what I was aiming for, and I decided to cut it into this little drabble because it seemed such a waste to just delete it. :p
