End of the World Scenarios, and Their Likelihood of Happening. The Beginning.

Dec 20, 2008 20:08

I am going to go through all the End of the World Scenarios, from something that could happen today, to something that could happen in one googol years from now. From something reasonable, to off the wall to the religious. I am also going to state the likelihood of such scenario, and what I would do if Free Will is still an option.

All information is from EXIT MUNDI and Wikipedia

The first Entry is all about an EMP Blast.
Titled: "Learn to Camp or Be a Punk of Stream."

Let's say that you wake up late for work because your alarm clock didn't go off. It's not on. So you look to your cell phone. It's off as well. You try to turn it on, but it won't. You get ready for work and go out to your car. It won't even turn over. "I lost my job" you think. Trust me that's the least of your troubles. You go to your neighbor's house, nothing is on. You try to use the phone, but there isn't any sound. Every where you go, and everything you try to use that uses electrical plug in is fried. For good.

If you were outside when this happened, say listening to a MP3 player, or driving, or flying in a airplane, you'd see a blue flash, smell burnt plastic the Music will stop, the car will shut off and start to coast, and the airplane will, too, stop and, well, rocket towards earth. If you have a pacemaker, you're gone. The only way to go some place, is on foot. Basic stuff like clocks, fridges, boilers, washing machines and lights will never work again. Pretty soon, your tap will stop delivering water, your money will run out, and the shops will be empty.

It will be a shock if this happens. As one Exit Mundi Reader puts it:

"We will have no food. We will have no clothing. We will have no access to the information needed to make that food and that clothing. The ending will be sudden and complete. If air systems are needed, the deaths will come in minutes. If water is needed, deaths will come in agonizing days. If food is needed, death will pay a visit only after several excruciating weeks. People escaping the clutches of the Machine will not be able to cope with an environment that doesn't pamper them anymore. They will die clutching the remotes that used to make the Machine do what they wanted and needed. They will die hungry, thirsty, filthy and cold."

Hooray! You just lived through an EMP Blast! It wasn't hard was it? An EMP, or Electromagnetic Pulse happens one of two ways, either by some wicked genius detonated an EMP-weapon high up in the atmosphere or perhaps some star violently exploded nearby. They all happen the same way. An EMP unleashes an extremely large amounts of charged photos that knock electrons out of air particles. Those electrons rain down on Earth and fry "everything with circuitry or wiring in it, turns into a foul-reeking porridge of molten plastic and short-circuited wires."

Now, this type of event won't kill us all, per se, but it will send us back at least to the 18th Century. I personally don't think this is the worst Scenario. "With luck, some machines will survive. Devices running on batteries or machines that were turned off during the blast, have a far better chance of survival." Say if your Cell phone was unplugged and turned off, but it would only be useful till the battery ran out, and who could you call? All the Phone towers are rendered useless from the EMP Blast. so I guess you could play Tetris. Since all money is just numbers in a bank's computer, all your money, that was in the bank, will be gone, but so will your debt. Things like diesel engines and steam powered engines would still work, but they would be a bit hard to control without the electronic parts. For transportation you might want to use a horse, or a bike with a card in it's spokes (for that motorized sound.). Non-power tools such as hacksaws, hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches are all in tip top condition. So you can at least build up Society with your bare hands.

In 2003, 50 million people in Canada and New York were left without power for a few hours. It was caused by one tree. If one tree can do all that...

The possibility of this happening is extremely plausible. It could very well happen tomorrow.

I'd personally build up to a Steam Punk type of new world.
