He almost flinches when Ragnelle emerges from the bedchamber, radiant and laughing, and takes his arm. "Well, sir! Am I worthy of thy brother now?" She has raven hair, rose-bright cheeks, a smile full of secrets. He watches her mistrustfully.
"No woman is that," he says.
Ragnelle takes his face between her palms. Her eyes are dark as his own, wild but gentle, like the forest shade. "I will never do him harm."
You will keep me from him, Mordred thinks. It costs him an effort to say, "Well enough."
"Nor thee," his sister says softly, and kisses him, smiling.
