I will be attending a Veteran's Day (Armistice Day to the rest of the world) Ceremony later this morning as part of my comittment to the Community Band. I encouraged a lot of my ESL students to attend (a lot of them live here in Woodland), but I think they're mostly concerned about a language barrier and aren't likely to attend.
Among the pieces the band will be playing are Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan, which is gorgeous, and
Each Time you Tell their Story (there's a link at the bottom to hear the piece). The song is based around a poem written by the composer's father, which is featured in the beginning of the song as narration over a military drum cadence. It's a very lovely and moving piece.
Each Time you Tell Their Story
By Dr Samuel J Hazo
No soldiers choose to die
It's what they risk by being who
And what they are.
It's what they dare while saving someone else
Whose life means suddenly as much to them as theirs
Or more.
To honor them, why speak of duty or the will of governments?
Think first of love, each time you tell their story.
It gives their sacrifice a name
And takes from war
It's glory.
