Um... I'll Just Drop This Here

... and then go hide *nervous*

Title: It... doesn't really have one X/ (Creativity depleted, cannot think anymore.)
Characters/Pairings: Sort of Grey Fox/Snake, Master Miller makes a cameo appearance.
Rating: G
Word Count: 600
Summary: Fox ponders, Snake sleeps. A suitably fluffy conclusion is reached.
Warnings: None, unless you're allergic to bad writing, meta or fluff.

Notes: This is based on a picture I drew months ago. It didn't have a background. Someone asked me how these two ended up in 'peaceful fully-clothed snugglings,' since fluff is not something that is not typical of them. And I thought and thought for months on this, and finally got to writing this out. I hope it's not too out of character or anything. I did my best! (If anyone's curious, the picture is on my tumblr, here

“Hey Miller, how about some heat back here?”

“I’m sorry, Fox. We barely have enough fuel to get us back home as it is.” The Hell Master’s voice crackled over the comms. system.

Fox grunted in reply, huddling further into his leather coat. The air in the cabin was filled with the deep thud of rotor blades; he could feel the vibrations deep in his chest cavity. His breath was frosting in the air.

“How’s the rookie?”

Fox glanced across at the man next to him.

“He’s sleeping. It was a tough mission.”

A week of bitter cold stakeouts and no sleep. A frantic race against time when the mark didn’t show, a chase ending in a messy kill and the heavy knowledge of a first mission half-failed. Even if he was only on-site support, it must have been hard to swallow.

He was shivering. Didn’t he have a coat at the start-

Oh. He lost it. Left behind when they gave chase like the hounds they were.

Fox’s gaze lingered on the rookie’s face for a little longer than necessary. He was... nostalgic. His face and his movements brought back
memories Fox thought long buried. Huddling around a stuttering campfire, enduring the constant rain, and the Boss, younger, his lone eye not as jaded or as distant as it is now. A growth of stubble dusted the boy’s chin, making the resemblance more striking than ever. It was a wonder no-one in Foxhound had brought it up yet. Especially when his first mission was accompanying the best they had to offer. No false pride, just knowledge.

And yet... despite the similarities in appearance, despite how he moved, and his voice. And oh, the way he checked over a gun, his hands steady and sure as they clicked the slide back and forth, his eyes focussed and sharp as they checked over the feed ramp and the barrel...
And yet - he wasn’t the same as the Boss used to be. He was quieter, colder. It chilled him to think these words but... Less human. Memories, distant and blurred, of a time spent as nothing. If he felt anything at all, it didn’t show. Which was perhaps for the best in a soldier but... It bothered Fox.

He just couldn’t leave it alone - was this how he had been? Is this what the Boss had picked up all those years ago on that godforsaken peninsula?

Fox’s chain of thought was broken by a violent sneeze. A short groan followed, and Snake blearily cracked his eyes open. Fox studied him again. His lips had taken on a bluish tint.

“You’re catching a cold.” It was a statement rather than a question.

Snake’s reply was a cough. Fox sighed, and pulled his arms from the sleeves of his jacket.

“Sir?”

In his shirtsleeves, he shifted closer and threw the length of the coat around Snake’s shoulders.

“We’re in Arctic airspace. We have to keep warm, but Miller can’t waste any fuel on heating the chopper.” He rested his arm on Snake’s shoulder. “So-“

“I understand.” Not a flicker of emotion on his face, none embarrassment or confusion that would be normal in a rookie treated like this by his CO.

“Go back to sleep.”

“Yes, sir.” A nod against his shoulder. The rookie relaxed against him like a cat, shut his eyes, and slept.

“Hmph.” Amused, Fox drew the other body closer for warmth, and rearranged the coat over their shoulders a little.

It was going to be a long flight back to base, and he was tired.
