The scent of spice filled the apartment as Dave pulled out the first batch of cookies. During his retirements Snake had found the act of baking to be relaxing, even if he didn’t have much of an occasion to do it. Still, there was just something about the smell and taste of fresh baked cookies that always seemed to make the holidays more bearable to Snake.
He quickly lifted off the nutmeg logs off of the single cookie sheet and placed them on the counter before filling up the sheet with the next batch. These sweet, spicy treats had always been Dave’s favorite and he made a note to thank Natasha for finding the recipe for him the next time he saw her while putting the second batch in the oven.
Grabbing one of the cooling logs, Snake crept to Otacon’s room and peered out the doorway. Hal’s stalkers were moving about. On the street below, Snake could pick out two lookouts and knew that something big was about to go down.
Snake tried to be angry at the situation, but a large part of him that was annoyed at sleeping alone on a bench piled with worn out sleeping bags, being unable to speak to his partner and spend the majority of his days wandering the cold streets of New York like vagrant while Metal Gears were being produced couldn’t help but rejoice at the opportunity.
Stealthily, he gathered up everything that could not be replaced and began to pack. He glanced over to the other apartment and saw one of the men unpacking what looked like a sniper riffle. Grimacing, Snake realized that he’d need to cause a distraction before heading out.

Hal pressed his drink against his cheek, certain that tomorrow he’d have one hell of a burse tomorrow. Mei Ling gave him a sympathdic look. “Tell Snake, I said Merry Christmas.”
“I will.” Hal said shouldering his laptop bag and unfastening his seatbelt.
“And make sure he gets enough rest.” Mei Ling called out as he stepped out of the car.
“I’ll try.” Hal called back and gave her a wave. She returned it before pulling out into traffic while Hal casually strolled down the street.
Mei Ling had been right; Dave did need to get more rest. If Snake still wouldn’t let him close the blinds so that they could share the bed, then perhaps he’d just have to get the stubborn soldier to share the floor with him.
A fire engine speed past as Hal tried to figure out what to take home for dinner. His Codec rang and he turned and studied a display of mostly empty shelves.
“Otacon,” Snake called out urgently. “Where are you?”
“I think either by the kitchen store or the one with all the knick-knacks.” Hal answered, his throat staring to get tight.
“I’m heading the other way to the van, do not head home.” Snake said, Hal understanding the unspoken message to stay inconspicuous and meet him there. While the prospect of not having to spend another night under surveillance was a pleasant one, he couldn’t help but worry what had caused the sudden course in action.
“Are we leaving?” Hal asked eagerly. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, we’re leaving, after what I did to the place I doubt we could go back.” Snake said cryptically, in the distance he could hear a siren. “Don’t worry, I’m fine, I’ll meet you at the van in twenty minutes.
“See you there.” Hal replied and cut the connection. He then stepped away from the widow, noting the confused looking clerk that was gazing at him from a now darkened window.
Snake weaved through the cars and snuck glances at the street below, keeping an eye out for Otacon and his stalkers. From the north, Dave saw Hal round the corner with relief. Made his way to the van they had spend the last couple of months converting into a mobile base when he noted movement out of the corner of his eye.
A figure emerged from the ally and grabbed Hal’s laptop, the tech grabbed at the case and tried to pull back. The other grabbed his arm and grinned until Hal threw his drink directly into his attacker’s eyes causing him to clutch at his face. Using the distraction, Hal jerked away form the other man and ran madly into the garage.
Dave was waiting near the entrance and pulled Hal behind a truck near the entrance. From between the tires, they saw the attacker look around furiously then run off from where he came.
“That was close.” Hal said in relief as Dave helped him to his feet. Their fingers lingered together for a moment as they exchanged smiles. It felt good to be able to really talk to Snake again.
“Let’s get out of here before they come back.” Dave said without harshness. Hal nodded and quickly fished out his keys and headed quickly to the van. Before Snake could protest, Hal got in the driver’s seat and turned on the engine.
Dave did not protest but climbed into the passenger seat and pulled the plastic bag off of the dashboard. It was then that he noticed the forming bruise on his partner’s face. Hal noted Snake’s questioning glance and let out an embarrassed laugh.
“I got caught in the crossfire of a battle over a phone.” Hal began embarrassedly. “I was helping Mei Ling find one; she wanted to send it to Naomi. And the next thing I knew, the guy in front of me ducked I got punched. Security came out and I got out of there while Mei Ling paid for the phone.” Dave let out a chuckle puling out a couple of cookie.
“Here, I didn’t have time to frost them.” He said and Hal accepted the thing long cookie passed to him. He noted that there still was a bit of warmth in the cookie as he brought it to his mouth and took a bite. A brief “mmm” passed his lips as he tasted the sweetly spicy cookie.
“This is good,” Hal told Dave as they drove away.
“Well, it is the holidays.” Dave replied thoughtfully. “And it gave me something to do besides sleep or wander around on the streets.”
“Snake, I” Hal began, floundering for an excuse. He’d been so consumed with keeping Dave from overexerting himself that he failed to take boredom into account.
“I understand.” Snake reassured his partner. “It’s just a shame that I had to waste the last batch of these cookies.”
“Huh?” Otacon asked at the non sequiter.
“They were setting an ambush; one of them even had a sniper rifle.” Snake answered with a hint of anger in his voice. “So I set up a distraction, packed up what I could and left the rest of the cookies to burn. Once the fire department arrived I took advantage of the confusion to slip away. DDon’t worry, I made sure that things didn’t get out of hand before then.” Otacon nodded in gratitude and the two slipped into a comfortable silence as they shared the cookies.
“I was going to give this to you later, but I got you something.” Otacon said as he handed Snake the laptop case.
“I thought you were going to get a new one.” Snake said noting that the case was way too light to contain a computer.
“I didn’t see any I liked in stock.” Hal replied with a shrug. “I’ll order one once we get to our next home. Go on open it.”
Snake unzipped the case to find a fleece blanket. He pulled the blanket out to reveal the huskies printed on it and heard two thumps clatter to the floor “I know you miss your dogs and the living room is an icebox.” Hal explained steering the car towards the highway.
Dave looked at the two packs of Lucky Strikes that had fallen from the blanket. “Thanks.” he said softly.
Not quite the reaction I was looking for but, you’re welcome.” Hal said flushing with embarrassment.
“What were you looking for?” Dave asked.
“I donno, maybe ‘you shouldn’t have Hal, I’ve decided to quit.’” Otacon said hopefully.
“But I couldn’t dream of letting your gift going to waste.” Snake countered playfully.
It was after midnight when they finally found somewhere to rest. They were both tired and eager to get some rest. Hal pulled the car to rest in the parking lot while Dave unhooked his seat belt, grabbed the blanket he’d spent the evening covered with, climbed into the back and began to set up their bed. Hal turned off the car and switched on the auxiliary power, the heater wasn’t much but it’d keep them from freezing. Hal climbed into the back himself, kicked off his shoes and settled next to Dave on the narrow inflatable mattress. There was no awkwardness as the two shifted limbs and intertwine their bodies, and settled down to sleep.
“Good night Dave.” Hal said sleepily, removing his glasses and placing them in a nearby shelf.
“Good night Hal.” Dave answered with affection, pulling Hal closer. He heard the engineer give a fond sigh and closed his eyes.
“You know, it’s kind of strange but being like this, I feel more at home that I have for years.” Hal murmured before falling off into sleep. Dave mentally thought the same thing as he followed his partner.
That night, it was Christmas again in Snake’s dreams, but there were no nightmares to disturb his rest.
